Overview:<\/strong>
\nThe Hokkaido Shimbun Press is looking for an Assistant Correspondent for our London Bureau, which is located on Fleet Street, central London. You will assist the foreign correspondent to prepare articles to be published in Japan, and handle Bureau administration. The Bureau covers political, economic, cultural news from the UK and other European countries.<\/p>\n

The Hokkaido Shimbun Press was established in 1942, and its head office is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Newspapers are published twice daily. The morning edition has a print run of over 1 million copies, the evening edition approximately 0.5 million.<\/p>\n

Flexibility is essential as though you will work for 3 or 4 days a week, you will occasionally be required to work overtime.<\/p>\n

Candidates should note that this is NOT a writing position. In addition, although the ability to work in Japanese is a requirement, it should not be your principal reason for applying for this position.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Responsibilities:<\/strong>
\n\u30fbFollow daily news relating to current affairs, politics and economy;
\n\u30fbConduct research on a wide range of topics, with attention to accuracy and detail;
\n\u30fbAttend and summarise press conferences, meetings, lectures and briefings;
\n\u30fbConduct (occasionally transcribe\/interpret) interviews over the phone and\/or in person;
\n\u30fbAssist with the planning of and participate in business trips around Europe;
\n\u30fbAssist Japanese correspondent with any language difficulties they may have and help them to handle the administration of moving to a new country;
\n\u30fbAnswer phone calls and manage office administration.<\/p>\n

Essential requirements:<\/strong>
\n\u30fbA keen interest in and understanding of news and current affairs;
\n\u30fbStrong research and communication skills;
\n\u30fbThe ability to work in both English (native\/fluent) and Japanese (ideally JLPT N1, degree level, or equivalent);
\n\u30fbProactive approach to suggesting article ideas;
\n\u30fbStrong organisational skills and ability to work to tight deadlines.<\/p>\n

Desirable skills:<\/strong>
\n\u30fbWorking knowledge of another European language.<\/p>\n

This is a great opportunity for a person with an interest in current affairs, journalism and\/or international relations. Unfortunately we are unable to sponsor overseas workers from outside the EEA who require a Tier 2 (General) visa.<\/p>\n
