{"id":3723,"date":"2009-02-22T12:57:23","date_gmt":"2009-02-22T12:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=3723"},"modified":"2009-02-22T12:59:06","modified_gmt":"2009-02-22T12:59:06","slug":"nytimes-article-when-consumers-cut-back-a-lesson-from-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/02\/22\/nytimes-article-when-consumers-cut-back-a-lesson-from-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"NYTimes article:  When Consumers Cut Back:  A Lesson From Japan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/bio.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/mcdonaldsinafrica.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"179\" \/>I noticed this artice in the <strong><em>NY Times<\/em><\/strong> today by <strong>Hiroko Tabuchi<\/strong> titled &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/22\/business\/worldbusiness\/22japan.html?th&amp;emc=th\" target=\"_blank\">When Consumers Cut Back:\u00a0 A Lesson From Japan<\/a><\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 It was interesting to read and contemplate the impact of the lingering &#8220;depression era&#8221; mentality that the article suggests many Japanese people still carry.<\/p>\n<p>However, in addition to starting with anecdotal evidence (i.e., one or two examples of frugal Japanese people) and extrapolating to a more generalized, anxiety-inducing trend, I was also a bit bothered by the implied conclusion that <!--more-->conservation is bad.\u00a0 I understand from a macroeconomic perspective that it&#8217;s helpful to a country&#8217;s economy when everyone spends and consumes more and that deflation causes signficant problems.\u00a0 But from a long-term perspective, it seems that in casting a judgment, it&#8217;s also worth considering the benefits to our society when people are in the mindset of re-using bathwater for laundry purposes and repairing their clothes and other items rather than purchasing new ones.<\/p>\n<p>Feel free to share your own perspectives in the comments section of this post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I noticed this artice in the NY Times today by Hiroko Tabuchi titled &#8220;When Consumers Cut Back:\u00a0 A Lesson From Japan.&#8221;\u00a0 It was interesting to read and contemplate the impact of the lingering &#8220;depression era&#8221; mentality that the article suggests many Japanese people still carry.
