Happy New Year!\u00a0 The greeting in the title is an abbreviation of \u300c\u660e\u3051\u307e\u3057\u3066\u304a\u3081\u3067\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3059\uff01\u4eca\u5e74\u3082\u3088\u308d\u3057\u304f\u304a\u9858\u3044\u3057\u307e\u3059\u3002\u300d (“Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!\u00a0 Kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegai shimasu.”).\u00a0 We all know how much the Japanese love their abbreviations!\u00a0 I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing \u5e74\u672b\u5e74\u59cb (nenmatsu nenshi, or year-end and new year), and are ready and refreshed for 2015.\u00a0 We are now in the year of the sheep, so for all of you with this animal sign this is your year.<\/p>\n

The Abe administration is also hoping it is the year for women, coming off of his disastrous efforts in this arena last year with the resigning of two female ministers and general skepticism in regard to his Womenomics agenda.\u00a0 There was an interesting article in the NYT<\/a> last week about Abe’s hopes for the “supermom,” or working mothers.\u00a0 It talks about endeavors such as increasing child care facilities and allowing more flexible working styles, and also highlights the term \u51c4\u6bcd (sugohaha<\/em> or amazing mothers).\u00a0 I heard this expression for the first time, and evidently it was coined by Rumi Sato, a journalist and author who carried out a study of working mothers in Japan with this title.<\/p>\n

Looking forward to seeing what the new year has in store for Abenomics and Japan!<\/p>\n
