The Office of International Education (OIE)<\/b>\u00a0invites applications for the position of Foreign Student\/Scholar Advisor. We especially welcome qualified candidates, with experience in the field, who can contribute through their work\/life experiences to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.<\/p>\n

About the position:<\/b>\u00a0The Foreign Student\/Scholar Advisor (FSSA) will share responsibilities for advising 4,000+ international students and 600 visiting scholars. Duties focus primarily on immigration-related matters, including immigration advising and precise record-keeping as required by federal law while following university policies and procedures. Additional FSSA responsibilities include providing on-going coordination with university departments before and after student and scholar arrival, program development and implementation, policy development, advocacy, and special projects. He\/she collaborates closely with other OIE staff in addition to university colleagues in various units including academic departments, the Career and Professional Development Center, the Intercultural Communication Center, University Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Enrollment Services.<\/p>\n

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of F and J immigration regulations, experience with SEVIS and batch software, familiarity with H-1B regulations, cross-cultural sensitivity and patience and the ability to work collaboratively and productively in a busy professional environment. Confident public speaking skills, organization and attention to detail, the ability to anticipate questions\/needs and engage in problem-solving while maintaining composure and meeting deadlines are also necessary. Experience working, living or studying abroad is preferred and US citizenship or lawful permanent residence is required.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Minimum Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of training and experience; One to two years experience in foreign student\/scholar advising; Cross-cultural sensitivity; patience; excellent writing, editing and speaking skills; comfort in presenting before a large audience; ability to work cooperatively and productively in a professional setting; ability to initiate and lead including big picture perspective and implementation of detailed plans; organizational skills and keen attention to detail; understanding of F and J non-immigrant regulations and importance of sensitive deadlines; knowledge of SEVIS; ability to work well, in a fast-paced environment,\u00a0with faculty, staff and students throughout the university; Leadership; customer contact and problem-solving while maintaining composure; ability to maintain confidentiality, set and meet deadlines and work under pressure; ability to recognize and solve problems and juggle multiple tasks for achievement of short and long term goals. \u00a0Must be US citizen or legal permanent resident of the US. Preferred Requirements: Master’s degree in relevant educational discipline and two to three years experience in foreign student\/scholar advising; experience working, living, and\/or studying abroad; current knowledge of SEVIS functionality, reporting requirements, Advisor duties; experienced cross cultural training and familiarity with Carnegie Mellon academic programs would be helpful.<\/p>\n
