Still, if English is your native language, certain Japanese grammar rules, like saying \u201cwa\u201d and \u201co\u201d to mark the subject and object of your sentences, can seem like a major hassle.<\/p>\n

With practice, though, these things start to become automatic. Even better, the Japanese language is filled with\u00a0incredibly handy phrases that we\u2019d love to import into English<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Doumo \u2013 Hello, thanks, and hello\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0thanks<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Eight<\/p>\n

The extremely convenient\u00a0domo<\/em>\u00a0manages to do the job of\u00a0both \u201chello\u201d and \u201cthank you,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as it\u2019s the first component of both\u00a0doumo konnichiwa<\/em>\u00a0(good afternoon) anddomo arigato gozaimasu<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(thank you very much).<\/p>\n

Aside from being shorter than the two phrases it can replace (which are both a bit of a mouthful even by Japanese standards),\u00a0doumo\u00a0<\/em>can also be used to combine the two sentiments. Did someone invite you to their house? A warm\u00a0\u201cDomo!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0with a smile as they open the front door works as both a friendly greeting and a heartfelt thanks for opening their home to you.<\/p>\n

2. Ozappa \u2013 Working in broad strokes<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Eight<\/p>\n

Ozappa<\/em>\u00a0is often used to describe a type of personality, and while it directly translates to \u201crough\u201d or \u201cbroad,\u201d it doesn\u2019t mean the person in question is abrasive, nor does it indicate someone who\u2019s broad-minded in the sense of being open to new ideas. Rather, someone who\u2019s\u00a0ozappa<\/em>\u00a0doesn\u2019t really sweat the details, whether for better or worse<\/strong>. Your friend who planned the barbeque, said he\u2019d buy the beer and stick it in the cooler, but didn\u2019t think to buy ice? He\u2019s\u00a0ozappa<\/em>, but so is your other pal who doesn\u2019t get worked up when you hand him a lukewarm brew.<\/p>\n

3. Bimyou \u2013 Subtly\u2026not right<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it literally means \u201csubtle,\u201d\u00a0bimyou<\/em>\u00a0usually implies that\u00a0something is a little off, and that maybe it\u2019d be better to just do without it altogether<\/strong>. The dash of red wine that pork cutlet sauce really doesn\u2019t need, the clunky metaphors in the love letter your wrote to your junior high crush, and the tasteful nose piercing you picked out for your job interview could all be described as\u00a0bimyou<\/em>.<\/p>\n
