{"id":33594,"date":"2014-01-27T15:14:37","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T19:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=33594"},"modified":"2014-01-27T15:19:11","modified_gmt":"2014-01-27T19:19:11","slug":"wit-life-260-shohei-imamura-film-festival-at-asia-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2014\/01\/27\/wit-life-260-shohei-imamura-film-festival-at-asia-society\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT  Life #260: Shohei Imamura Film Festival at Asia Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong>WIT Life <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><em><strong>is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\"><strong>Stacy Smith<\/strong><\/a> <\/em><em><strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pref.kumamoto.jp\/english\/list.html\">Kumamo<\/a><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pref.kumamoto.jp\/english\/list.html\">to-ken<\/a> CIR, 2000-<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>03).\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>She starts<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es some of the interesting tidbits and <\/strong><\/em><em><strong>t<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ends along with h<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong>er own observations.<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/f\/f6\/Ballad_of_Narayama_1983.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First of all, a belated \u660e\u3051\u307e\u3057\u3066\u304a\u3081\u3067\u3068\u3046\u3054\u3056\u3044\u307e\u3059\uff01 It&#8217;s been a busy start to 2014, but I&#8217;m happy to be blogging again in the year of the horse (\u5348\u5e74 or <em>umadoshi<\/em>).\u00a0 It being umadoshi is good news for people like me whose animal sign is the horse, as one is said to have good luck when the zodiac sign for the current year is the same as the one from the year when you were born.\u00a0 This makes me what is called a \u5e74\u5973 (<em>toshi onna<\/em>), and I&#8217;m hoping this year of the horse gives me faster feet in the many marathons I run&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the Japan Foundation, the Asia Society is currently featuring the <a href=\"http:\/\/asiasociety.org\/new-york\/vengeance-shohei-imamura-film-series\">Vengeance is Shohei Imamura<\/a> film series from January 17-February 1.\u00a0 I have been a fan of Imamura&#8217;s ever since seeing The Eel (\u300c\u3046\u306a\u304e\u300d, with Yakusho Koji playing a former convict) in 1997, and was glad to have the opportunity to check out some of his other flicks.\u00a0 He was the first Japanese director to win two Palme d&#8217;Or awards, one for Unagi, and one for <a href=\"http:\/\/asiasociety.org\/new-york\/events\/ballad-narayama\">The Ballad of Narayama<\/a> (\u300c<span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><span class=\"t_nihongo_kanji\" lang=\"ja\">\u6962\u5c71\u7bc0\u8003<\/span><\/span>\u300d) in 1983, screened this past Saturday night as part of the Imamura film festival.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set in the 19th century, the movie takes place in a small rural Japanese village where they have<!--more--> a tradition of bringing elders who turn 70 to the summit of Mount Narayama, where they are left to die.\u00a0 They are carried there by their sons, and this unusual custom is obeyed as it is seen as a necessary offering to the mountain gods who watch over the townspeople in their daily lives.\u00a0 The story focuses on Orin, a 69-year old matriarch whose time to go to Narayama is soon approaching and who wants to put things in order within her family before then.\u00a0 Her worries include making sure her sons are taken care of and that there is enough food to go around.\u00a0 As you might have guessed from the poster above the movie is sexually explicit at times, even including a bestiality scene!\u00a0 The tapestry of the humans&#8217;
