WIT Life <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>Stacy Smith<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>(Kumamo<\/a><\/strong><\/em>to-ken<\/a> CIR, 2000-<\/strong><\/em>03).\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>She starts<\/strong><\/em> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em>r<\/strong><\/em>es some of the interesting tidbits and <\/strong><\/em>t<\/strong><\/em>r<\/strong><\/em>ends along with her own <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>observations.<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

It was recently announced that the kanji representing 2013 would be \u8f2a (rin<\/em> or wa<\/em>).\u00a0 It\u00a0 means ring, circle, or wheel, and refers to different aspects that have converged this year.\u00a0 This was the most popular submission in the public contest run by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation, and there were several explanations for why.\u00a0 One idea came from the five rings symbolizing the Olympics, in regard to the September announcement that Tokyo would host the Summer Olympics in 2020.\u00a0 Another was the coming together of citizens in a circle of recovery from the\u00a0Great East Japan Earthquake (Thanks to this rebuilding,\u00a0construction and real estate related stocks have\u00a0been booming on the Nikkei Stock Average).\u00a0 Yet another interpretation was the private\/public cooperation that led to the recent registration of Mt. Fuji on the World Heritage List.\u00a0 \u8f2a received 9518 votes, and second-place \"20131207_184557\"<\/a>\u697d (raku<\/em>) which received 8562 votes referred to the Tohoku Rakuten (\u697d\u5929) Golden Eagles’ victory in the Nippon Series baseball championship.<\/p>\n

For those who are interested in kanji and Japanese calligraphy, I would highly recommend the current exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art entitled\u00a0Brush <\/a>Writing in the Arts of Japan<\/a>.\u00a0 It was interesting to learn about the poetry contests engaged in at court, as well as check out the ukiyo-e depicting calligraphy in the pleasure quarters.\u00a0 Pictured here is the more modern PixCell deer in front of a \u5c4f\u98a8 (byobu<\/em> or folding screen) decorated with birds and flowers of the 12 months.\u00a0 Other byobu<\/em> featured typical Japanese seasonal themes such as momiji and sakura<\/em>, and I especially enjoyed seeing the handscrolls with illustrated portions of The Tale of Genji.\u00a0 This exhibit will be on display until January 12, so make sure to visit before it’s gone!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
