\"Screen_Shot_2013-07-30_at_9.48.32_AM\"<\/a>JET alum Kelly Luce<\/a> (Kawasaki\/Tokushima, 2002-04)<\/strong> will publish her debut collection of fiction this fall titled Three Scenarios in Which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. \u00a0The book is a collection of ten stories set in Japan, and many of her stories are characterized by magical realism. According to\u00a0A Strange Object<\/a>, the book’s indie publisher, “Hana Sasaki\u00a0will introduce you to many things\u2014among them, an oracular toaster, a woman who grows a tail, and an extraordinary sex-change operation. These stories tip into the fantastical, plumb the power of memory, and measure the human capacity to love.” The cover was designed and illustrated by\u00a0Yuko Shimizu.<\/a><\/p>\n

Luce’s work has appeared in the\u00a0Chicago Tribune, Crazyhorse,\u00a0Kenyon Review,\u00a0The Southern Review, New England Review,\u00a0and\u00a0other magazines. Her short story “Yamada-san’s Toaster” was included in the\u00a0Tomo: Friendship Through Fiction\u00a0anthology, (reviewed on JETwit last year.<\/a>) She lives in Santa Cruz, California, and Austin, Texas, where she is a fellow at the Michener Center for Writers.<\/p>\n

A little bit about Kelly<\/span>: \u00a0After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in cognitive science, Luce spent three years in Japan. During her time there, she became the first non-Japanese to join a professional\u00a0Awa Odori<\/strong>\u00a0dance team (ren), starred in an English conversation video series for children, and spent a week in a women’s prison in Yokohama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
