{"id":31243,"date":"2013-07-25T12:33:53","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T16:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=31243"},"modified":"2013-07-25T12:49:00","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T16:49:00","slug":"wit-life-243-effect-of-internet-on-japanese-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2013\/07\/25\/wit-life-243-effect-of-internet-on-japanese-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #243: Effect of Internet on Japanese elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong>WIT Life <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><em><strong>is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\"><strong>Stacy Smith<\/strong><\/a> <\/em><em><strong>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pref.kumamoto.jp\/english\/list.html\">Kumamo<\/a><\/strong><\/em><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pref.kumamoto.jp\/english\/list.html\">to-ken<\/a> CIR, 2000-<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>03).\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>She starts<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es some of the interesting tidbits and <\/strong><\/em><em><strong>t<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ends along with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/images.bwbx.io\/cms\/2012-12-17\/1217-japan-elections-630x420.jpg\" width=\"272\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This past Sunday&#8217;s election for the Upper House of Japan&#8217;s Parliament provided an overwhelming victory to PM Abe&#8217;s Liberal Democratic Party.\u00a0 As the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/07\/22\/world\/asia\/governing-party-appears-headed-to-lead-japanese-parliament.html?ref=opinion\">New York Times noted<\/a>, &#8220;His conservative coalition now seems assured a working parliamentary majority through 2016, which would end the trend of weak revolving-door governments, which saw six successive prime ministers over the past six years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The results also seem to be a vote of confidence for Abenomics, the Prime Minister&#8217;s economic plan comprised of the three arrows of monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and pro-growth strategy.\u00a0 While these reforms seem to have been beneficial so far, there are voices of concern regarding Abe&#8217;s nationalistic views and their impact on Asian neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting aspect of the election was how it was affected by the introduction of <!--more-->Internet use (i.e. Twitter, Facebook) during the campaign period, which I discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2013\/07\/05\/wit-life-238-internet-use-in-japanese-elections\/\">a recent post<\/a>.\u00a0 There were hopes that allowing online activity would increase the civic participation of younger voters, but the voting rate was 52.6%, 5.31 points lower than during the previous election in 2010 and the third-lowest showing in postwar history.\u00a0 Clearly, this technological addition did not have the positive impact that was hoped for.<\/p>\n<p>A survey was carried out on 50 men and women in their 20s, asking if they used the Internet as a resource for the election.\u00a0 Only 40% of this sample took advantage of the changes, with 20 responding yes and 30 saying no.\u00a0 Those who answered affirmatively said that they appreciated having a variety of sources to consider.\u00a0 Those who answered negatively expressed that there was too much information and it overwhelmed them, and in addition they had a hard time confirming its veracity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WIT Life is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).\u00a0 She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends along with her own observations.
