After all, Kiowa \u2013 as I initially misread the name \u2013 has an American ring. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiowatribe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Kiowa are a Native American tribe<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>However, I now know the history of Koiwai cheese \u2013 and its unusual name \u2013 goes all the way back to the adventures of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp\/en\/event\/2013\/choshu\/info.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Choshu Five<\/a>, a group of young men who secretly left Japan in 1863 to study in Britain. After their return, they became leading figures in the country\u2019s rapid modernization. One of them, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndl.go.jp\/portrait\/e\/datas\/545.html\" target=\"_blank\">Masaru Inoue<\/a>, is remembered as \u201cthe father of the Japanese railways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1888, Inoue visited Iwate to inspect the progress of railway construction there.
