Overview:<\/b>
\nThe Bing Overseas Studies Program at Stanford University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director for its program in Kyoto, Japan.\u00a0Applicants are encouraged to respond promptly.\u00a0This is an immediate opening with a target start date of November 1, 2013, or sooner.<\/p>\n

Stanford University is one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions and is known for its entrepreneurial character and its relationship to Silicon Valley.\u00a0 Areas of excellence range from the humanities to social sciences to engineering and the sciences.<\/p>\n

The Stanford Bing Overseas Studies Program offers study abroad programs for Stanford undergraduates to enhance their overall educational experience.\u00a0 Now in its 54th year, the program sends about 50 percent of each graduating class abroad during their time as undergraduates.<\/p>\n

The Stanford Program in Kyoto was founded in collaboration with the School of Engineering, and has since provided students of engineering and other disciplines the opportunity to fit language immersion and practical classroom experience into their busy schedules.\u00a0 The program welcomes students in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities.\u00a0 The program is hosted on the Doshisha University campus, located at the heart of Kyoto.\u00a0 Doshisha is one of Japan\u2019s leading private universities with over 25,000 students and a diversity of programs.<\/p>\n

The Position:<\/b>
\nThe Director of the Stanford Program in Kyoto is charged with nourishing an intellectual and social environment that is supportive of excellence and high academic standards for Stanford undergraduates.\u00a0 The Director is responsible for the academic and administrative management and day to day operation of the Bing Overseas Studies Program center and for making decisions on local resource allocations and priorities, recognizing both local practice and University operating principles.<\/p>\n

This position supervises three staff employees and manages the employment of lecturers associated with the program.\u00a0 The Director has immediate responsibilities for approximately 60 Stanford undergraduates attending the center and for providing direction, leadership, advising and support for their needs, in collaboration with Bing Overseas Studies staff located on the Stanford campus.<\/p>\n

Duties & Responsibilities:<\/b><\/p>\n

Academic Program Management (30%):
\n\u2022Develop and implement a curriculum within the context of Stanford University\u2019s academic organization and standards, in coordination with home office senior staff and faculty.\u00a0 Launch new and innovative courses that make use of the unique opportunities in Kyoto and academic resources at Doshisha University.
\n\u2022Identify, hire, evaluate, and coordinate local faculty to lecture and teach seminar courses or tutorials at an appropriate academic level, bearing in mind differences between American and Japanese styles of instruction.
\n\u2022Promote interaction among local faculty and between local faculty and visiting Stanford professors, especially in discussions of pedagogy and curricular issues.
\n\u2022In collaboration with the home office, develop student application criteria, evaluate applications, and prioritize waitlists.
\n\u2022Manage a language teaching program.
\n\u2022Teach one course per quarter, including field trips where appropriate.
\n\u2022Provide academic advising for students.
\n\u2022Help supervise research projects, independent study, or individual directed reading.
\n\u2022Develop and implement a guest lecture program coordinated with the particular quarter\u2019s curriculum.
\n\u2022Manage timely and accurate reporting of student grades.<\/p>\n

Student Life Oversight (20%):
\n\u2022Maintain a regular presence at the Center in order to provide advice, counseling and resources to students on a variety of matters related to their academic, intellectual and personal well-being.
\n\u2022Oversee the coordination of student living arrangements.\u00a0 Provide leadership in execution of orientation programs for incoming students.
\n\u2022In collaboration with campus student affairs staff and the Bing Overseas Studies Program, respond to unpredictable personal, health, psychological and academic problems, and do so with sensitivity and understanding of Stanford\u2019s institutional concerns and Japan\u2019s contextual background.
\n\u2022Define objectives of social and cultural events for students and general oversight.\u00a0\u00a0 Maintain discipline at the Center, where necessary, and handle student emergencies including responding to parental concerns.
\n\u2022Establish and oversee clear access to local, English-speaking mental and physical health professionals.
\n\u2022Maintain awareness of the mental and physical health and well-being of student participants including regular consultation with the home campus as needed.
\n\u2022Facilitate student involvement in community service activities.<\/p>\n

Management of Internship Opportunities (15%):
\n\u2022Nurture high level relationships with business organizations, govt. agencies and non-profit organization that may lead to the placement of interns
\n\u2022Manage Internship Coordinator to further develop internship opportunities and sites at Japanese and multinational firms (approximately 50 Stanford students concentrating primarily in engineering, finance, management, international relations, social sciences)
\n\u2022Manage placement of students in internships in their field of interest.<\/p>\n

Management of Professional Staff (15%):
\n\u2022Supervises 3 administrative members of the Kyoto overseas office, overseeing performance appraisal, objective setting, work load, and professional development. Provides direction and guidance to employees who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments.
\n\u2022Makes decisions regarding work processes or operational plans and schedules to achieve program objectives, in cooperation with home office staff.
\n\u2022Provides guidance and training to staff, and motivates individuals to achieve results.
\n\u2022Fosters an attitude of partnership with home office and the Stanford community.
\n\u2022Provides a framework for establishing an effective team-oriented work group where success is based on overall program delivery rather than individual accomplishments.
\n\u2022Operates in compliance with local labor law and practice, while maintaining Stanford principles of employee engagement.<\/p>\n

Cultivation and Development of Professional Relationships (10%):
\n\u2022Develop and establish linkages with local academic communities, academic institutions, government agencies, alumni and donors.
\n\u2022Maintain awareness of emerging academic directions in Japan, including outstanding scholars.
\n\u2022Maintain communication with local peers directing other U.S. study abroad programs.
\n\u2022Maintain and develop professional relationships with Bing Overseas Studies students, staff, visiting faculty and donors
\n\u2022Maintain contact with and host advocates for the program, including donors and alumni.
\n\u2022Host Stanford University visitors, as appropriate.<\/p>\n

Administrative and Financial Oversight (10%):
\n\u2022Ensure that operations of the Center and the academic programs are in compliance with all policies, regulations and laws governing Stanford University as well as local governmental agencies and organizations.
\n\u2022Work directly with Bing Overseas Studies home office to prepare and manage annual budget; with oversight of all fiscal activities including expenditures, review and approval of monthly cash reports.
\n\u2022Obtain local legal advice as needed.<\/p>\n

Qualifications:<\/b><\/p>\n

Education:
\n\u2022Doctorate or equivalent experience.<\/p>\n

Experience:<\/b>
\n\u20222+ years of university level teaching experience.
\n\u2022Demonstrated professional experience in higher education in a managerial role.
\n\u2022Professional experience with American undergraduates at an institution similar to Stanford preferred, but not required.
\n\u2022Experience with overseas study programs preferred, but not required.<\/p>\n

Knowledge:<\/b>
\n\u2022Advanced knowledge of Japanese culture, history and business etiquette.
\n\u2022General knowledge of Japanese academic communities.
\n\u2022General knowledge of academic program planning.<\/p>\n

Skills & Abilities:<\/b>
\n\u2022Strong bi-lingual written and oral communication skills and English and Japanese language fluency.
\n\u2022Strong bi-lingual reading skills essential.
\n\u2022Ability to maintain a primary residency in Kyoto.
\n\u2022Ability to provide academic and managerial leadership of the program and office.
\n\u2022Ability and willingness to undertake international travel.
\n\u2022At the time of hire, must be legally authorized to work in Japan.
\n\u2022Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
\n\u2022Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.
\n\u2022Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.
\n\u2022Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.<\/p>\n
