She starts<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> tidb<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>its and t<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ends together with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-30564\" alt=\"IMG_4101\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4101-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m on the tail end of a business trip in Portland, my first visit to the state of Oregon.\u00a0 Being located on the West Coast I had assumed there would be significant Japan connections, and was happy to find that I was right.\u00a0 One of the first places I went to was the Japanese Gardens, proclaimed to be the &#8220;most authentic Japanese garden outside of Japan.&#8221;\u00a0 The 5.5 acre grounds are sprawling, and include natural gardens, sand and stone gardens, and a tea garden.\u00a0 The timing of our visit was great, as they were having a special <a href=\"http:\/\/japanesegarden.com\/isamu-noguchi-exhibition\/\">Isamu Noguchi exhibition<\/a> as part of their &#8220;Art in the Garden&#8221; series (through July 21).\u00a0 It was neat to see some of Noguchi&#8217;s pieces, on loan from his LIC museum, juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Portland skyline.<\/p>\n<p>I also found a J<a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4090.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-30565\" alt=\"IMG_4090\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4090-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>apan connection when I checked out the local Rogue Brewery one night.\u00a0 One of their many offerings was the Morimoto Black Obi Soba ale, a richer and nuttier version of the brewery&#8217;s original <a href=\"http:\/\/rogue.com\/beers\/morimoto-soba-ale.php\">Morimoto Soba Ale<\/a>.\u00a0 They also feature a Morimoto Imperial Pilsner, which is golden in color, floral in taste, and described as a &#8220;hedonistic mouthful.&#8221;\u00a0 All three are part of the 2003 Morimoto Signature Series, a collaboration between<!--more--> Rogue and Chef Masaharu Morimoto.\u00a0 I only got to drink the Black Obi as there were other types of beer I also wanted to sample, but it was good enough to make me want to go back and try the other Morimoto varieties next time.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, Portland has deep ties to the Japanese American community.\u00a0 One of the main highways is named after the late <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Naito\">Bill Naito<\/a>, who was a business leader and philanthropist in the city.\u00a0 In addition,\u00a0 there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonencyclopedia.org\/entry\/view\/japanese_american_historical_plaza_portland\/\">Japanese American Historical Plaza<\/a> that commemorates &#8220;the hardships suffered by Japanese immigrants and the indignities imposed by the incarceration of persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II.&#8221;\u00a0 The waterfront location was selected as it is where the pre-war Nihon Machi (Japan Town) was located.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have a chance to get there during this trip, but plan to make it there on my next one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WIT Life is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
