She starts<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> tidb<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>its and t<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>r<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ends together with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em><br style=\"color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_123753.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-29767\" alt=\"20130413_123753\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_123753-150x150.jpg\" width=\"165\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><br style=\"color: #222222; font-family: arial; font-size: small; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\" \/>After spending the last week in New Orleans on business, I was happy to come home to lovely spring weather here in NY.\u00a0 The sun is shining and the flowers are blooming, not least of all the sakura!\u00a0\u00a0 Around these parts the \u685c\u796d\u308a (<em>sakura matsuri<\/em>) at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is famous for celebrating the cherry blossoms and Japanese culture, but over in Queens there is another festival which has grown over the last three years.\u00a0 As you can probably tell from this shot of the 59th Street Bridge shrouded in sakura, I&#8217;m referring to Roosevelt Island&#8217;s very own \u685c\u796d\u308a.<a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_115722.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-29769\" alt=\"20130413_115722\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_115722-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After getting off the F train or alighting from the tram, a short walk along the East River leads you to the stars of the show, the sakura.\u00a0 Although they weren&#8217;t quite at their peak, they were<!--more--> flowering nicely and provided enjoyment for the throngs of people walking beneath them.\u00a0 Further along the promenade were a host of performances, as well as booths selling food and Japanese goods such as kimono and furoshiki.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_122448.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-29772\" alt=\"20130413_122448\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/20130413_122448-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With delicious offerings such as \u30a4\u304b\u713c\u304d (<em>ikayaki<\/em>), Go! Go! Curry and \u304a\u597d\u307f\u713c\u304d (<em>okonomiyaki<\/em>) I was torn, but I ultimately decided to go with the fine food from \u9197\u9175\u5eb5 (Hakkoan).\u00a0 This Brooklyn-based company often hosts workshops and sets up shop at various events, and it specializes in Japanese foods rich in probiotics which are said to enhance your health and beauty.\u00a0 My friend and I got a skewer each of \u713c\u304d\u9ce5\u00a0 (yakitori) and an onigiri with miso, and we shared a bowl of zenzai for dessert.<\/p>\n<p>\u685c (sakura) + \u548c\u98df (<em>washoku<\/em>, Japanese food) = \u5e78\u305b (<em>shiawase<\/em>, happiness)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WIT Life is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
