Overview:<\/b>
\nThe Chunichi Shimbun Group is looking to recruit an Assistant Correspondent for our European Bureau based in London. Working in a team of two Correspondents and two Assistant Correspondents, you will assist the Correspondents in preparing articles to be published in Japan and handle bureau administration.<\/p>\n

The European Bureau covers political, economic, cultural and sports news from the UK, Northern Europe, European institutions and Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s newspapers, The Chunichi Shimbun and The Tokyo Shimbun, are published twice daily in Japan, in Japanese, with a readership of over 4 million.<\/p>\n

Flexibility is essential as although you will work mainly during office hours, you will occasionally be required to work overtime. You should also be willing to travel within Europe.<\/p>\n

Candidates should note that this is NOT a writing position. Also, whilst the ability to work in Japanese is a requirement, it should not be your principal reason for applying for this position.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Follow daily news, current affairs, and the politics and economics of our area of coverage;
\n\u2022 Conduct research on a wide range of topics, with attention to accuracy and detail;
\n\u2022 Attend and summarise press conferences, meetings, lectures and briefings (in English);
\n\u2022 Conduct (and occasionally transcribe\/interpret) interviews over the phone and in person;
\n\u2022 Assist with the planning of and participate in business trips around Europe;
\n\u2022 Assist Japanese correspondents with any language difficulties they may have and help them to handle the administration of moving to a new country;
\n\u2022 Manage all phone communication and office administration;
\n\u2022 Occasionally translate published articles from Japanese into English.<\/p>\n

Essential Requirements:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 A keen interest and understanding of news and current affairs;
\n\u2022 Strong research and communication skills;
\n\u2022 The ability to work in both English (native\/fluent) and Japanese (ideally JLPT N1, degree level or equivalent);
\n\u2022 Proactive approach to suggesting article ideas;
\n\u2022 Strong organisational skills and ability to work to tight deadlines.<\/p>\n

Desirable Skills:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Working knowledge of French.<\/p>\n

This is a great opportunity for a recent graduate with an interest in current affairs, journalism and\/or international relations. Unfortunately we are unable to sponsor overseas workers from outside the EEA who require a Tier 2 (General) visa.<\/p>\n

We anticipate a mid-May 2013 start date (negotiable).<\/p>\n
