After two years of not celebrating the holiday while I was in rural Japan, I decided to host a Thanksgiving potluck for my friends <a title=\"Homemade Thanksgiving\" href=\"http:\/\/www.illmakeitmyself.net\/2011\/12\/01\/homemade-thanksgiving\/\">last year<\/a>, and it was one of the best decisions I\u2019ve ever made. Everyone\u2019s favorite dishes\u2013even ones I really disliked as a child, like green bean casserole\u2013were exceptionally good. The atmosphere was good, too\u2013everyone seemed really excited to be there and to share their dish; plus, there was no <a title=\"The Jam of Oppression?: Feminism, \u201cNew Domesticity,\u201d and Gender-Neutral Home Cooking\" href=\"http:\/\/www.illmakeitmyself.net\/2012\/08\/22\/the-jam-of-oppression-feminism-new-domesticity-and-gender-neutral-home-cooking\/\">weird gender segregation in the kitchen<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re living in Japan, making your favorite holiday dishes can be somewhat difficult. Maybe there aren\u2019t fresh green beans in late November at your store; maybe your moven is too small for a turkey.
