{"id":2727,"date":"2009-01-15T17:57:30","date_gmt":"2009-01-15T17:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=2727"},"modified":"2009-01-15T18:02:44","modified_gmt":"2009-01-15T18:02:44","slug":"wit-life-19-michelin-phenomenon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2009\/01\/15\/wit-life-19-michelin-phenomenon\/","title":{"rendered":"WIT Life #19: Michelin Phenomenon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"..\/category\/wit-life\/\"><span><em><\/em><\/span><\/a><em><a href=\"..\/category\/wit-life\/\"><strong><em><span>WITLife<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/a><em><\/em><\/em><span style=\"#252525;\"><a href=\"..\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><\/em><\/a><em> is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer <\/em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stacysmith.webs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em><span style=\"none;\">Stacy Smith<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/strong><em> (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching the news in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<\/em><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.community.learnsushi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/michelin.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"242\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">The famous French Michelin guide finally made its way to Tokyo last spring with a 2008 edition, and the 2009 edition came out last November. <span> <\/span>A news feature called \u201c<\/span>Michelin Phenomenon\u201d<span style=\"normal;\"> examined how the Japanese are viewing this take on their culinary culture.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">Japan\u2019s gourmet guide with the most history is \u201cTokyo Ii Mise Umai Mise\u201d (Tokyo\u2019s Good and Delicious Restaurants), started in 1967.<span> <\/span>Written on the cover of a recent issue was the quote, \u201cThe French just don\u2019t understand.\u201d<span> <\/span>When the editor was asked about this assertion, he claimed, \u201cWhat French and Japanese look for is different.<span> <\/span>For them the atmosphere of a restaurant is important, whereas for us it\u2019s all about the taste.\u201d<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">A new guide with a Japanese publisher came out in reaction to the Michelin guide.<span> <\/span>Its editor felt that with only a year or two of experience in Japan, it would be impossible for <\/span><!--more--><span style=\"normal;\">the French to properly judge restaurants and that their criteria were unclear.<span> <\/span>In his guide, he put this hypothesis to the test by going to all of the places that Michelin had reviewed and reevaluating them, sometimes giving no star to ones that had originally received three! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">Next an average Michelin reader, a 31-year old real estate businesswoman, was profiled.<span> <\/span>She had visited about 1\/3 of the restaurants with three stars, and many more of the ones with lower ratings.<span> <\/span>She found that the Michelin guide was very useful for when she took customers out and wanted to impress them.<span> <\/span>Next they interviewed a woman working in online production who primarily uses Michelin for lunch outings.<span> <\/span>She said it had a certain cache that other guides didn\u2019t, and that she got as excited dressing up to visit its picks as she would about going to the opera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">One food critic offered that Michelin\u2019s status is likely a large reason for its popularity in Japan.<span> <\/span>The Japanese defer to Europe and its culinary traditions, and this is part of Michelin\u2019s authority and appeal.<span> <\/span>Another critic said it might just be as simple as the fact that Japanese liked rankings and that Michelin was another way to satisfy this craving.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">The head of Michelin was asked why no <\/span><em><span style=\"#252525;\">yakitori<\/span><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/em><span style=\"normal;\">or <\/span><em><span style=\"#252525;\">yakiniku<\/span><\/em><span style=\"normal;\"> restaurants had been selected.<span> <\/span>Arguably both of these are an essential part of Japanese cuisine, but he claimed that although there were many excellent restaurants in these categories, none of them had made the cut. <span> <\/span>He was also asked whether he thought it was appropriate for foreigners to be evaluating Japanese food, and he threw this question back at the interviewer by asking if he had ever eaten French cuisine.<span> <\/span>When he responded yes and that he loved it, the Michelin head said there was no reason he wouldn\u2019t be qualified to review French food.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"normal;\">Only time will tell whether this import continues to enthrall its readers or if domestic guides will reclaim their ascendency.<\/span><em><span style=\"normal;\"><span> <\/span><span> <\/span><span> <\/span><span> <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Interpreter\/Translator\/Writer Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 Recently she\u2019s been watching the news in Japanese and sharing some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
