The 90-Second Newbery is a film festival I curate in which filmmakers of any age are challenged to make movies that tell the story of a Newbery award-winning book in 90 seconds or less.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.90secondnewbery.com\/\">Full details here.<\/a>\u00a0The deadline for video submission is October 29, 2012. Details about screenings in New York and Chicago\u2014including special celebrity guests\u2014below!<\/p>\n<p>But first, check out the latest submission above! It\u2019s of Margi Preus\u2019 fantastic 2011 Newbery Honor book,\u00a0<em>Heart of a Samurai.<\/em>\u00a0The movie is by Alex, Amy, Izzy, Asher, and Zach from Burley Elementary in Chicago. Full disclosure: I helped with this one! And here\u2019s our twist: we did the film\u00a0<em>in Japanese,<\/em>\u00a0even though the students, er, don\u2019t know Japanese. I helped with the script and pronunciation. There are storms at sea! Whales! Burning beards! Fistfights! It\u2019s also slightly longer than 90 seconds. Oh well. ENJOY!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So where will the Second Annual 90-Second Newbery Film Festival be screened? So far we\u2019ve nailed down the New York and Chicago dates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The New York City screening<\/strong>\u00a0will be Sunday, December 2, 2012 from 3-5 pm at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.symphonyspace.org\/event\/7425-the-90-second-newbery-film-festival-with-kate-dicamillo-jon-scieszka-rita-williams-garcia-and-james-kennedy-\">Symphony Space<\/a>. Just as last year, it will be co-hosted by me and former Ambassador for Children\u2019s Literature\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsworldwide.com\/\"><strong>Jon Scieszka<\/strong><\/a>. I\u2019m also thrilled and honored to announce our two special guests: Newbery winners\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.katedicamillo.com\/\"><strong>Kate DiCamillo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(2001 Honor book\u00a0<em>Because of Winn-Dixie<\/em>\u00a0and 2004 Medal winner\u00a0<em>A Tale of Despereaux<\/em>) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ritawg.com\/\"><strong>Rita Williams-Garcia<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(<em>One Crazy Summer<\/em>, 2011 Honor Book). My co-host will be New York Times bestselling author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueballiettbooks.com\/\"><strong>Blue Balliett<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(<em>Chasing Vermeer, The Wright 3, The Calder Game, The Danger Box<\/em>, and more).<\/p>\n<p>Whoa! This is some serious kidlit literary firepower! It\u2019ll be an honor to share the stage with these leading lights children\u2019s literature.
