WIT Life<\/a> <\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/em>is <\/strong><\/em>a periodic series written<\/strong><\/em> by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator <\/strong><\/em>Stacy Smith<\/strong><\/a> <\/em>(Kumamo<\/a><\/strong><\/em>to-ken<\/a> CIR, 2000-03). She starts<\/strong><\/em> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she sha<\/strong><\/em>r<\/strong><\/em>es s<\/strong><\/em>ome of the interesting<\/strong><\/em> tidb<\/strong><\/em>its and t<\/strong><\/em>rends together with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em>\"\"<\/p>\n

Over the weekend I finally got to see\u00a0I Wish (\u5947\u8de1), the newest English release from my favorite Japanese director, Hirokazu Kore-eda (\u662f\u679d\u88d5\u548c).\u00a0 This movie is set in Kyushu, and tells the story of two brothers separated due to their parents’ divorce (one up north in Fukuoka, one down south in Kagoshima).\u00a0 Now that all of Kyushu is connected by bullet train, the older brother had heard it said that if you are there at the moment when two shinkansen cross (in Kumamoto, where I was a JET), you can make a wish and it will come true.<\/p>\n

The brothers (the talented Maeda siblings, pictured here with Kore-eda) come up with wishes of their own and are accompanied by friends when they make the journey for this purpose.\u00a0 The original Japanese title can also be translated as “miracle”, and for many of these wishes to be realized a miracle would be necessary.\u00a0 I will leave it to you to see if this happened or not, but I would definitely recommend this movie as an enjoyable journey for viewers to take.<\/p>\n

I first fell in love with Kore-eda back in high school after seeing “Afterlife” (\u30ef\u30f3\u30c0\u30d5\u30eb\u30e9\u30a4\u30d5) at the local arts cinema.\u00a0 At time I was relatively unfamiliar with Japanese culture, but since learning the language and living over there I have appreciated his films on a deeper level. \u00a0 Some of his later works have been emotionally heavy in their themes, such as Nobody Knows (\u8ab0\u3082\u77e5\u3089\u306a\u3044) and Still Walking (\u6b69\u3044\u3066\u3082\u6b69\u3044\u3066\u3082), or deceptively light such as Air Doll (\u7a7a\u6c17\u4eba\u5f62).\u00a0 No matter what he offers, you know that you will always be in for a film that is going to provoke you and make you think.<\/p>\n

Kore-eda tends to work with a repeating cast of characters.\u00a0 For example, one of my favorite Japanese actors Hiroshi Abe (unforgettable in the hilarious 2006 Japanese television drama The Man Who Can’t Get Married or \u7d50\u5a5a\u3067\u304d\u306a\u3044\u7537) plays both the son in Still Walking and has a minor role as a teacher in I Wish.\u00a0 Yui Natsukawa (who is originally from Kumamoto) starred with him in the aforementioned drama and plays his wife in Still Walking and the mother of one of the brother’s friends in I Wish.\u00a0 I was surprised not to see You who plays the daughter in Still Walking and the horrible mother in Nobody Knows in this newest film, but Joe Odagiri played a great role as the boys’ father following his appearance in Air Doll.\u00a0 Here in New York you can find I Wish playing at Lincoln Plaza Cinema, so be sure to check it out before it goes!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
