{"id":19384,"date":"2011-05-21T14:15:41","date_gmt":"2011-05-21T18:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/?p=19384"},"modified":"2012-07-20T16:14:20","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T20:14:20","slug":"hibari-sensei-southlake-texas-holds-benefit-concert-for-sister-city-tome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2011\/05\/21\/hibari-sensei-southlake-texas-holds-benefit-concert-for-sister-city-tome\/","title":{"rendered":"Hibari-sensei: Southlake, Texas holds benefit concert for sister city, Tome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><em><em><strong>Jen Wang (Miyagi, 2008-09)<\/strong> <em><em> is a lab tech in Dallas and a staff writer for the Japanese music website <\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/purpleskymagazine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Purple SKY<\/a>.\u00a0 Her love of cosplay and her junior high school students inspired the name for her own Japanese pop culture blog, <\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/hibarisensei.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hibari-sensei\u2019s Classroom<\/a>.<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In response to the Tohoku earthquake, community initiative Southlake Working As a Team (S.W.A.T.) joined forces with Southlake Sister Cities, the City of Southlake, and the Carroll Independent School District to form Southlake 4 Japan.\u00a0 The organization dedicated itself to helping Southlake\u2019s sister city, Tome, which suffered damage to its buildings and roads and struggled to accommodate the evacuees from neighboring cities. \u00a0 Southlake\u2019s relationship with Japan began in 1991, long before Toyoma and neighboring towns merged to form the city of Tome.\u00a0 Since then, the two cities have engaged in cultural and education exchange programs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19392\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/s4j-benefit-concert11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19392\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19392\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/s4j-benefit-concert11-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/s4j-benefit-concert11-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/s4j-benefit-concert11.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harrison Edwards&#8217; band, Vibe Zoo, plays in the Southlake 4 Japan concert.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Southlake Sister Cities had already set up an earthquake relief fund and collected messages for a scrapbook, but more needed to be done to raise awareness within the community.\u00a0 Carroll Senior High School students Harrison Edwards and Carter Humphrey proposed the idea of a benefit concert.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards felt a connection with Tome as a former student ambassador of the Sister Cities exchange program.\u00a0 He and Humphrey already had experience organizing such an event, having been the masterminds behind last year\u2019s Rock for Haiti earthquake relief concert.\u00a0 Southlake 4 Japan was quick to help with providing a venue, publicity, and volunteers.\u00a0 S.W.A.T. founder and Southlake Baptist Church Lead Pastor Clayton Reed was in charge of the event programming while Edwards and Humphrey sought out bands to fill the line-up.<\/p>\n<p>The concert was held on May 7 in Southlake Town Square.\u00a0 Attendees were encouraged to donate at least $5, which got them a wristband and a cell phone screen protector.\u00a0 There was an origami booth with bumper stickers for sale and food supplied by Qdoba Mexican Grill.\u00a0 Southlake Sister Cities provided information about Tome and collected signatures for a banner being sent to Tome\u2019s mayor.<\/p>\n<p>To read the rest of the post, <a href=\"http:\/\/hibarisensei.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/19\/southlake-comes-to-the-aid-of-its-sister-city-with-benefit-concert\/\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jen Wang (Miyagi, 2008-09) is a lab tech in Dallas and a staff writer for the Japanese music website Purple SKY.\u00a0 Her love of cosplay and her junior high school students inspired the name for her own Japanese pop culture blog, Hibari-sensei\u2019s Classroom.
