Led by its founder, enigmatic vocalist\u00a0Makigami Koichi\u00a0(vocal, theremin, cornet), the group\u2019s members include\u00a0Mita\u00a0Freeman\u00a0(guitar, sampler),\u00a0Sakaide Masami\u00a0(bass, electronics),\u00a0Shimizu Kazuto\u00a0(piano, synthesizer, bass-clarinet) and\u00a0Sato\u00a0Masaharu\u00a0(drums, voice).\u00a0Currently a lecturer at Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, Koichi has\u00a0performed at Japan Society twice before as part of the\u00a0<em>New Voices from Japan<\/em> series curated by John Zorn (2006) and\u00a0<em>Ikue Mori: Celebrating 30 Years of Live, Love &amp; Music in NYC<\/em> also curated by Zorn (2008).<\/p>\n<p>Joining headliners Hikashu at the Manhattan venue\u00a0is singer, actress and Japanese pop culture icon Tomoe Shinohara with percussionist Steve Eto. Best known to anime fans in the West for singing <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/vXZOzUrkIbE\">&#8220;Ultra Relax,&#8221;<\/a> the title song of <em>Kodomo no Omocha<\/em> (released as <em>Kodocha <\/em><em>in North America<\/em>), Shinohara is a choice stylistic counterpoint to the sounds on display.
