The acclaimed festival received national attention two years ago when it hosted the premiere of <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Secret_of_Kells\">The Secret of Kells<\/a><\/em>, a European fantasy film that was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">North America&#8217;s largest film festival for children and teens, NYICFF offers an eye-opening selection of the best new animated and live action film from around the world for ages 3 to 18, with gala premieres, filmmaker Q&amp;As, filmmaking workshops, pre-screening giveaways, audience voting, and the NYICFF Awards Ceremony. Its jury this year includes Uma Thurman, Matthew Modine, Susan Sarandon, Gus Van Sant, James Schamus, Christine Vachon, Michel Ocelot, and John Turturro.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/japanese-culture-in-new-york\/asian-animation-opens-new-york-international-children-s-film-festival\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Click here<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> <strong>for the complete story.<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><em><strong><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">From March 9-19, New York\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.japansociety.org\/\">Japan Society<\/a> simmers nearly 50 years of yakuza (Japanese mafia) movies\u2014a mainstay of Japanese cinema\u2014in the Globus Film Series <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.japansociety.org\/hardest_men_in_town\" target=\"_blank\">Hardest Men in Town: Yakuza Chronicles of Sin, Sex &amp; Violence<\/a>, featuring 15 of the genre\u2019s sharpest selections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">In addition to acclaimed classics by directors Hideo Gosha (<em>The Wolves<\/em>) and Kinji Fukasaku (<em>Cops vs. Thugs, Battles Without Honor and Humanity<\/em>), the series includes lesser known titles and overlooked treasures by Seijun Suzuki (<em>Youth of the Beast<\/em>), Takashi Miike (<em>Dead or Alive<\/em>), Rokuro Mochizuki (<em>A Yakuza In Love<\/em>, <em>Onibi: The Fire Within<\/em>), and Academy Award winner Sydney Pollack (<em>The Yakuza<\/em>), as well as contemporary incarnations of the genre such as Takeshi Kitano\u2019s <em>Outrage<\/em>. Among eight premieres, four will receive their first screening outside of Japan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\">The fest ignites Wednesday (March 9) with a special introduction and live Q&amp;A by celebrated filmmaker <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paulschrader.org\/\">Paul Schrader<\/a> for <em>The Yakuza<\/em>, Sydney Pollack&#8217;s overlooked 1970s gem starring Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura. The film was Schrader\u2019s debut as a screenwriter (in collaboration with his brother Leonard and <em>Chinatown<\/em> scribe Robert Towne), and he would go on to pen the scripts for Martin Scorsese&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Taxi Driver <\/em>and <em>Raging Bull<\/em> and direct such diverse works as <em>American Gigolo <\/em>and <em>Mishima<\/em>, among others.
