WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING IN JAPANESE LONDON?<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Norwegian Wood, Tran Anh Hung’s film, based on Murakami’s book.\u00a0 What was that?\u00a0 *Head spins on neck*.\u00a0 Erm, that was the first one-sixth of 2011, passed already.\u00a0 But fear not, now spring has most definitely sprung\u00a0 it\u2019s the perfect time to get out and appreciate Japan… in London!<\/p>\n

Japanese Literature<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fans of Japan-related scribblings are in for a treat this month.\u00a0 Tran Anh Hung\u2019s highly-anticipated screen version of Haruki Murakami\u2019s bestselling novel, ‘Norwegian Wood’, will open at UK cinemas from 11th March. \u00a0 British author David Mitchell\u2019s newest offering, ‘The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet’ isn\u2019t due for release until March 17th, but has already racked up 96 rave reviews on Amazon.\u00a0 If you fancy a literary chinwag,\u00a0 Japan Society book club members will be vociferously discussing ‘Silence’ by Endo Shusaku next Monday March 7th \u2013 Japan Society members shouldregister their attendance: events@japanesociety.org.<\/p>\n

Madame Butterfly<\/strong><\/p>\n

The enduringly popular Madame Butterfly is on at the Royal Albert Hall only until March 13th, so you\u2019ll need to be quick to catch it.\u00a0 Set in an \u2018enchanting\u2019 Japanese Water Garden, an extra show has been already been added to meet ‘huge popular’ demand.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t make it, why not order\u00a0 Angela Gheorghui\u2019s CD recording, lie back and think of Japan?\u00a0\u00a0 Or, if you’ve seen the opera and you crave more of the same, pre-order a copy of Lee Langley\u2019s Butterfly\u2019s Shadow \u2013 a novel in the style of Jean Rhys\u2019s Wide Sargasso Sea, that takes Puccini\u2019s Madam Butterfly as its starting point.<\/p>\n

HIBIKI – Japanese Music<\/strong><\/p>\n

Continuing on a musical note (!), HIBIKI: Resonances from Japan at King\u2019s Place will run from today 3rd March, until 5th March 2011.\u00a0 This eclectic event; \u2018A 1000-year journey through the rich heritage of Japanese music\u2019 features collaborations with London-based musicians and an exploration of \u2018Music in Mange\u2019 with Helen McCarthy. \u00a0Promisingly, there is also set to be a Suntory Hibiki whisky tasting in the bar.<\/p>\n

Bunka-Sai – Japanese Cultural Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n

And finally – a new Japanese Culture Festival: \u2018Bunka-sai\u2019 will take over Conway Hall for one day only, this Saturday 5th March, to bring together Japanese culture, language, food and drink.\u00a0 Organised by Akemi Solloway.<\/p>\n
