She starts<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shar<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dramastyle.com\/images\/3\/1\/Fireworks_from_the_Heart__2010_5031_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"168\" \/>Yesterday I had the chance to attend the ANA-sponsored screening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyork-tokyo.com\/wp\/fireworks\/\">Fireworks from the Heart (\u304a\u306b\u3044\u3061\u3083\u3093\u306e\u30cf\u30ca\u30d3)<\/a>, a sentimental film based on the true story of recent high school graduate Taro whose sister Hana suffers from leukemia.\u00a0 The family moves from Tokyo to Niigata for her treatment, a change that Taro resents as has has to leave junior high in the middle of his final year.\u00a0 Hana ends up being <!--more-->hospitalized for six months, and when she is finally releases she comes home to find that Taro is now a \u5f15\u304d\u3053\u3082\u308a (<em>hikikomori<\/em>), or social recluse.\u00a0 She makes it her mission to get him back into the world, and slowly but surely her effort pays off.<\/p>\n<p>The 5000-person town in Niigata that they have settled in is famous for its annual fireworks festival, which is not corporate but individually sponsored.\u00a0 Each firework that goes up has a special meaning as it has been personally designed and dedicated.\u00a0 Hana encourages Taro to join the local association of his peers who are responsible for doing his age group&#8217;s fireworks in the next year&#8217;s festival.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t accept him at first as he is an outsider to the town, but eventually his persistence pays off.\u00a0 Just when it seems like Taro has finally gotten his life back on track, Hana has an unexpected recurrence and is hospitalized yet again.\u00a0 Taro decides to make an unforgettable fireworks display for Hana, and this is something that keeps her hanging on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>As Japanese movies tend to be sappy and considering the topic I was worried that the melodrama would be excessive, but this touching movie pulled at my heartstrings in just the right way.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think there was a dry eye in the theater when it ended.\u00a0 The <em>matsuri sc<\/em>enes with their vivid colors and sounds brought back many great memories of my <em>yukata<\/em>-clad summers in Kumamoto.\u00a0 I could almost smell the assorted flavors wafting over from the various <em>yatai<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 As the seasons passed, the gorgeous shots of Niigata&#8217;s snow brought me back to reality and the winter wonderland waiting outside the theater door.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
