She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shar<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Yearning_2-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-15296\" title=\"Yearning_2-web\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Yearning_2-web-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Friday night I attended a free screening of\u00a0the movie <a href=\"http:\/\/asiasociety.org\/events-calendar\/yearning-japanese-cinema-1960s\">Yearning<\/a>, which was being shown as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/asiasociety.org\/arts-culture\/film\/film-series-japanese-cinema-1960s\">Japanese Cinema 1960&#8217;s film series<\/a> at Asia Society.\u00a0 This organization is co-sponsoring the event along with Japan Foundation, and they\u00a0have been\u00a0offering complimentary tickets to the five films that were being shown over a span of a little over a month.\u00a0 You had to sign up ahead of time by indicating which film you wanted tickets for and officially you could only pick one, but when I went there was a stand-by line so if you go early on the day of the show you are likely to get in even without tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Although Yearning was the English title of the movie, it came from the Japanese title of \u4e71\u308c\u308b<em> (midareru<\/em>), literally meaning <!--more-->to fall into disorder, be confused or be entangled.\u00a0 I think in the context of the movie the last translation is probably the closest, or\u00a0alternatively the loose translation of\u00a0&#8220;coming apart.&#8221; \u00a0 It depicts a family running a general store and their struggles amidst new competition from the big supermarket underselling all the local businesses in the neighborhood.\u00a0 The story focuses on the central character of Reiko, who was married to the oldest son before he was killed during the war.<\/p>\n<p>The movie begins with the return of the prodigal son Koji,\u00a0who was only 7 when she\u00a0joined the family.\u00a0 However, at 25 he now an adult\u00a0with a long-lived crush on his sister-in-law.\u00a0 Will they take their forbidden love to the next level, and will the family business\u00a0survive?\u00a0 Finding out how these issues will be resolved definitely keeps viewers&#8217; attention, but at times the melodrama was a bit much.\u00a0 Though I do have to admit that\u00a0the ryokan scene was very natsukashii!<\/p>\n<p>The remaining movie to be shown this week is The Fort of Death, described as\u00a0&#8220;a Japanese version of a B-Western.&#8221;\u00a0 Check it out if you can this Friday night at 6:45!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
