She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shar<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2010\/11\/25\/arts\/2d-sub-jp-murakami\/2d-sub-jp-murakami-popup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!\u00a0 And for those of you are who are on the Japanese calender, I hope you had a relaxing \u52e4\u52b4\u611f\u8b1d\u306e\u65e5\uff08<em>kinro<\/em><em>u kansha no hi <\/em>or Labor Thanksgiving Day) this past Tuesday.\u00a0 Though there is no turkey or cranberry sauce on this Japanese holiday, it resembles our Thanksgiving in that it is an occasion to commemorate labor and production and give one another thanks.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Macy&#8217;s Thanksgiving Day Parade has a new addition from Japan, balloons of artist Takashi Murakami&#8217;s Kiki and Kaikai creations.\u00a0 They are following in the footsteps of <!--more-->Japanese predecessors such as Pikachu and Hello Kitty who have made appearances in past parades.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/11\/25\/arts\/design\/25murakami.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=a28\">This NYT article<\/a> describes how Murakami carried out a Shinto purification ritual as the balloons were being blown up, and clearly captures his excitement regarding their debut.\u00a0 He was also interviewed on the Japanese news this morning, and spoke of Kaikai and Kiki like a proud papa. \u00a0 &#8220;Kaikai is the more stable, older brother, and Kiki is a bit rambunctious.\u00a0 I hope she behaves today.&#8221; (Incidentally, Kaikai Kiki is also the name of Murakami&#8217;s art production company.)<\/p>\n<p>He also e<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2010\/09\/02\/arts\/murikamicap\/murikamicap-blogSpan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"154\" \/>xplained the rationale behind writing their names in Japanese.\u00a0 &#8220;These days you often have local culture prized within international environments.\u00a0 I purposely avoided writing their names horizontally, and I would be happy if people were curious and wanted to know what it says.&#8221;\u00a0 Here you can see Murakami&#8217;s original design, which was then turned into clay models before being made into actual balloons.\u00a0 Murakami will be joining his offspring in a colorful turkey costume, so make sure to catch all three as they parade down the streets of Manhattan this morning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
