She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shar<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>es s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2010\/11\/14\/world\/PREXY\/PREXY-popup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"159\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>By now President Obama has returned from his longest overseas trip since taking office, where he made stops in India, Indonesia, Korea and Japan.\u00a0 In Japan he took part in the Asian-Pacific Economic Consortium (APEC) held in Yokohama, pictured here with Prime Minister Naoto Kan and his wife Nobuko this weekend.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, for Japan the focus of the event was relations with China in light of renewed tensions between the two countries due to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/11\/08\/AR2010110801559.html\">leak of a video<\/a> of a September collision between Japanese coast guard vessels and a Chinese fishing boat.\u00a0 The footage was taken near <!--more-->a group of disputed islands claimed by both Japan and China in the East China Sea, and it appeared on YouTube last week.\u00a0 This leak has shaken Japan government circles and the general populace,\u00a0with this story dominating the news for the last week.\u00a0\u00a0Authorities don&#8217;t yet know how the leak occurred or who is responsible, but they are looking into the possibility of a Japanese civil servant being responsible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kan met with Chinese president Hu Jintao for 20 minutes on Saturday on the sidelines of APEC, their first formal talks since the initial incident.\u00a0 \u00a0This exchange was reported as yielding little in terms of\u00a0substance, but for the Japanese side the fact that they were able to meet\u00a0at all\u00a0was significant.\u00a0 Up until then Beijing had been resistant to any overtures, perhaps to appeal to domestic public opinion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The APEC\u00a0event resulted in a declaration called the <a href=\"http:\/\/search.japantimes.co.jp\/cgi-bin\/nn20101115a1.html\">Yokohama\u00a0Vision<\/a>, which highlighted the 21 participating\u00a0member economies&#8217; (Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Taiwan, the United States, and seven ASEAN members \u2014 Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) eagerness to take concrete steps to bring reality to their vision of creating a Free-Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
