She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bite.ca\/bitedaily\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Mario.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"262\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/15\/world\/asia\/15japan.html?_r=1&amp;th&amp;emc=th\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s NYT has two articles about Japan\u2019s\u00a0technology and relations with China.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/20\/technology\/20game.html\">former<\/a>, Hiroko Tabuchi discusses how the country&#8217;s once dominance of video games has been overtaken by\u00a0Western game developer advances.\u00a0 The one exception is Nintendo, who has found great success with its Wii, but other companies are struggling\u00a0in terms of\u00a0economic resources and cultural understanding of what appeals to the international market (There is a\u00a0growing gap in\u00a0game styles between Japan and the West).\u00a0 Interestingly enough, in order to appeal to a global audience some video games are being written in scratch in English as opposed to relying on awkward translations from the original Japanese.\u00a0 The questions remains as to whether Japan can still produce star\u00a0characters\u00a0who can become the next\u00a0Mario or Sonic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0political side, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/20\/world\/asia\/20chinajapan.html?_r=1&amp;th=&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;emc=th&amp;adxnnlx=1284980804-DHJY3z5pwge3i4l9bj5fqw\">the second article<\/a> talks about a dispute between <!--more-->Japan and China over a Chinese fishing boat captain recently being arrested by the Japanese Coast Guard in an area where there are competing territorial\u00a0claims.\u00a0\u00a0Tensions are flaring as a\u00a0seemingly\u00a0small incident has had a huge spillover into other areas,\u00a0leading to\u00a0&#8220;mass cancellations of trips to Japan by Chinese tourists, as well as tensions over the possibility of drilling for natural gas in contested waters in the East China Sea.&#8221;\u00a0 It has become a test of will between the two neighbors as well as a symbol of Japanese anxieties regarding China&#8217;s increasing power and boldness.\u00a0 The captain is\u00a0 being held to be tried\u00a0in Japanese court, and in response this weekend\u00a0some Chinese\u00a0gathered in front of Japanese diplomatic missions to\u00a0commemorate the 79th anniversary of Japan\u2019s invasion of northeast China.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>*********************************************************************************** WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
