\"\"Last night I was having dinner with a Japanese friend and an American friend (both members of the Writers Interpreters Translators (WIT) Group), and when the term “risk averse” came up in conversation, my Japanese friend hadn’t heard the word “averse.”\u00a0 After we explained it to him, I asked how he would translate that into Japanese.\u00a0 He struggled with it for a moment, and then shared a kotowaza<\/em> (\u77f3\u6a4b\u3092\u305f\u305f\u3044\u3066\u6e21\u308b – ishibashi wo tataite wataru<\/em>) that translates as “Knock on a stone bridge and cross it,” implying someone who test every step on a stone bridge, which implies excessive caution.<\/p>\n

I wondered if there is a more direct translation for “risk averse” and also for “risk taker,” and so I put the question out to the WIT Group this morning, just for fun, which resulted in the below responses.\u00a0 (Thanks to professional interpreters\/translators George Rose<\/strong>, Joel Dechant<\/strong><\/a>, Stacy Smith<\/strong><\/a> and Jamie Graves<\/strong><\/a> for their responses.)<\/p>\n

\nrisk averse: \u30ea\u30b9\u30af\u5acc\u3044 or \u30ea\u30b9\u30af\u3092\u5acc\u3046\u4eba (risukugirai or risuku o kirau hito)<\/p>\n

risk taker: \u30ea\u30b9\u30af\u3092\u6050\u308c\u306a\u3044\u4eba (risuku o osorenai hito)<\/p>\n

Although I think something more colloquial might be more suitable. i.e.
\n\u30ea\u30b9\u30af\u3092\u907f\u3051\u3088\u3046\u3068\u3059\u308b<\/p>\n

And to get nice and Japanese for “risk taker,” I say
\n\u30c1\u30e3\u30ec\u30f3\u30b8\u30e3\u30fc<\/p>\n

\nThe yomikata <\/em>is “risk girai no” (someone who hates risks)\/”kiken wo saketagaru you na<\/em>” (someone who tends to avoid risks) and “risk wo ou hito<\/em>” (someone who accepts the burden of risks (on his\/her back))\/”bouken suru hito<\/em>” (an adventurer)\/”risk wo osorenai<\/em>” (someone who doesn’t fear risks).<\/p>\n
