She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_j2WXBAAsAek\/StdgL5kiRFI\/AAAAAAAAAGU\/5lQQS5wzzT0\/s400\/kinsan-ginsan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"240\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Recent news coming out of Japan has surrounded unsettling discoveries regarding its elderly population.\u00a0 Last week it was revealed that Tokyo\u2019s oldest listed man, who if alive would have been 111 last month,\u00a0likely died over 30 years ago.\u00a0 According to\u00a0a report on CNN this morning, currently\u00a0the whereabouts of about 30\u00a0Japanese centenarians are unknown.\u00a0 As discussed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-08-04\/missing-centenarians-revive-concern-about-japan-s-flawed-pension-records.html\">this coverage from Bloomberg<\/a>, &#8220;the disappearance of some of Japan\u2019s\u00a0oldest citizens is raising concern that some families are bilking the nation\u2019s pension system even as others risk being deprived of payments for the same reason &#8212; poor record keeping.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 This was a big issue back in 2007 when <!--more-->the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare lost millions of files related to the government-led pension system.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the obvious financial implications, many aspects of this story are just plain\u00a0creepy.\u00a0 For example, the remains of the above man were\u00a0found mummified in the house where he once lived with his daughter.\u00a0 When his wife pased away six years ago, he \u00a0received about $111,000 in pension payments.\u00a0 By the way,\u00a0the average lifespan for Japanese men and women reached a record last year, with men living an average of 79.59 years and women 86.44 years.\u00a0\u00a0 The ministry says that Japanese women have the longest life expectancy in the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
