She     starts her day   by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese,   and  here    she  shares  s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the  interesting tidbits and  trends   together  with  her   own observations.<\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iser.osaka-u.ac.jp\/~saijo\/jm\/jm2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"179\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was very excited to hear from one of my closest college friends that her husband would be having a business trip in Japan.\u00a0 Not only was I happy for him, a fellow classmate as well, to be able experience Japan, but also because of his line of work.\u00a0 Pictured at right, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jonathanmooney.com\/\">Jonathan Mooney<\/a> grew up with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia and didn&#8217;t learn to read until he was 12.\u00a0 However, he is now an amazing author and public speaker.\u00a0 He has his own non-profit based in California and often travels both domestically and internationally to share his experiences and help children like himself and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Jon has spoken in China before, but this was his first time going to Japan upon the invitation of a professor from Osaka.\u00a0 He will be giving a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iser.osaka-u.ac.jp\/~saijo\/jm\/poster.pdf\">presentation<\/a> in <!--more-->Tokyo this Saturday and Osaka on Sunday, and the title is \u300c\u50d5\u305f\u3061\u306f\u58ca\u308c\u3066\u306a\u3093\u304b\u3044\u306a\u3044\uff1a\u3000\u30c0\u30e1\u306a\u5b50\u3060\u3063\u3066\u3044\u308d\u3093\u306a\u3053\u3068\u304c\u3067\u304d\u308b\u300d (<em>Bokutachi wa kowarete nanka inai: Dame na ko datte ironna koto ga<\/em> <em>dekiru<\/em>), which can be translated as: &#8220;We&#8217;re Not Broken: Even &#8220;Bad&#8221; Kids Can Do Many Different Things.&#8221;\u00a0 His talk is free and open to the public, so if you are in town check it out!\u00a0 Having enjoyed his books and knowing him personally, I can guarantee that he will be an inspiring speaker.<\/p>\n<p>I am eager to talk to Jon when he returns from his trip to get a sense of what the feedback from the audience was.\u00a0 I have no experience in Japan with children who are learning disabled (LD) or have ADHD, and am curious as to what the degree of awareness is in general society and what measures are taken to help them learn and grow in a way that meets their needs.\u00a0 Based on the title of <em>dame na ko<\/em>, I have a feeling that awareness is relatively low and that they are somewhat shunned in society as others in Japan who are different tend to be.\u00a0 According to my former Japanese teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/2010\/05\/12\/wit-life-92-doumo-arigatou-sensei-watson\/\">Sensei Watson<\/a>, this is the case but lately more school districts seem to be hiring counselors and other  specialists.\u00a0 Hopefully by hearing about the experiences of someone like Jon who struggled in his youth and went onto to become a success story, the Japanese can find some inspiration that will help improve the lives of those with LD\/ADHD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
