She     starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese,   and  here    she shares s<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>ome of the  interesting tidbits and trends  together  with  her   own observations.<\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.japundit.com\/images\/husband.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last night I went to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyork-tokyo.com\/wp\/darling\/\">US premiere<\/a> of \u30c0\u30fc\u30ea\u30f3\u306f\u5916\u56fd\u4eba or My Darling is a Foreigner.\u00a0 This film is based on the manga series with the same title by Saori Oguri.\u00a0 I was introduced to this work by a Japanese friend shortly after it came out in 2002, and I devoured the volumes that were available at the time.\u00a0 It depicted the day to day life of this international couple and the bumps that they encountered along the road of their relationship.\u00a0 They eventually went on to have a child together, and since the first book went on sale this popular series has sold 3 million copies.<\/p>\n<p>Tony is the name of Saori&#8217;s husband and he hails from the United States.\u00a0 He is <!--more-->a \u8a00\u8a9e\u30aa\u30bf\u30af (<em>gengo otaku<\/em>) or language geek, always having questions about a particular Japanese phrase or wondering how to say something.\u00a0 Evidently she took some liberties in portraying his character, as I heard from a friend who knew the real Tony back in the day.\u00a0 He shared that Tony frequented Kichioji and wore a fedora, and was quite different from his fictional counterpart.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/tokyo5.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/08\/darling-movie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the movie he is played by Jonathan Sherr, an American <em>tarento<\/em> who is part of the comedy group &#8220;Tokyo Comedy Store.&#8221;\u00a0 Saori is played by the young actress Mao Inoue of the drama\/movie &#8220;Hana yori Dango&#8221; fame.\u00a0 Other familiar faces fill out supporting roles such as those of Saori&#8217;s family.<\/p>\n<p>Though it only clocked in at 100 minutes, this movie dragged slightly.\u00a0 As in many Japanese movies, the camera lingered a bit too long in certain parts, and of course there was the requisite running through the streets shot.<\/p>\n<p>However, overall it was an enjoyable flick providing laughs as well as memories of days in Japan (Early in the movie, the scene of Tony asking a Japanese man for directions is classic and something many of us have likely experienced).\u00a0 Go see it for the nostalgia if nothing else!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>************************************************************** WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
