She   starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here   she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her   own observations.<\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4732.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11878\" title=\"IMG_4732\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4732-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4732-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4732-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4732.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The hot, humid weather down here in Houston certainly takes its toll on the body, but I was able to enjoy a morning run this weekend with one of the participants in my group (By the way, this fellow runner is also a former interpreter, and I would highly recommend her Japanese-only <a href=\"http:\/\/ameblo.jp\/ibf4025\/\">very entertaining blog<\/a>).\u00a0 Our destination was Hermann Park located just off of the Rice University campus, and when we arrived and did some exploring we were able to find a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jgarden.org\/gardens.asp?ID=376\">Japanese garden<\/a>! (\u65e5\u672c\u5ead\u5712 or <em>Nihon teien)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was authentic in all respects, with manicured paths and a large tea house in the back.\u00a0 We took respite in the shade and <!--more-->slowed down to a walk to enjoy our time there.\u00a0 It was the perfect place to grab a drink of water and take in the scenery.\u00a0 Evidently the park was designed in 1992, and the stone lanterns <a href=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4734.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11880\" title=\"IMG_4734\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4734-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4734-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4734-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IMG_4734.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>adorning the premises were a gift from Houston&#8217;s sister city of Chiba as a symbol of their friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the tea house was an area with rocks placed in raked sand that was reminiscent of Kyoto&#8217;s Ryoanji, one of my favorite spots to visit during my <em>ryuugaku<\/em> days.\u00a0 Maybe it was because of this connection, but I really had a sense of peace being there.\u00a0 I met up with a JET friend for dinner that night, and he was telling me how the garden is often used for Japanese festivals as well as tea ceremonies.\u00a0 This beautiful garden in Houston was a lovely unexpected discovery!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
