Today is our last full day in San Francisco, so I decided to explore some of the offerings in the immediate vicinity of where I am staying, Hotel Nikko.\u00a0 Here in the lobby there are so many Japanese customers that I occasionally get flashbacks to the many times I spent in Kumamoto’s Hotel Nikko at various events during my time on JET.\u00a0 Natsukashii!<\/em><\/p>\n

I went for a\u00a0walk to the local\u00a0mall with my co-interpreter who was on a mission to find cream puffs.\u00a0 I had no idea that Beard Papa<\/a> had an outpost here on the West Coast, but sure enough there he was in the basement\"\"<\/a>‘s fancy\u00a0food court (There\u00a0are also other stand-alone cafe locations throughout the Bay Area)!\u00a0 Tonight’s flavors didn’t turn me on (aside from regular, the\u00a0flavor of the week was strawberry),\u00a0but I was sad to see that I had missed stopping by when I was in town two weeks ago.\u00a0\u00a0The flavor of the week at the time had been kabocha <\/em>(pumpkin), which I absolutely love and have not yet tried in a cream puff.\u00a0\u00a0They have a handy little calendar posted by the register so you can check what upcoming flavors of the week will be.\u00a0 Will have to keep closer tabs next time!<\/p>\n

Here in\u00a0SF, besides Japantown\u00a0you can also get\u00a0<\/em>\u548c\u83d3\u5b50 (wagashi<\/em>)\u00a0at the nearby \u6e90\u5409\u5146\u5eb5<\/a>\u00a0(Minamoto Kitchoan).\u00a0 We didn’t venture outside as it was raining, but it was good to know where\u00a0it is\u00a0located should an emergency\u00a0need for anko<\/em>\u00a0arise during a future\u00a0stay and I don’t feel like making the trek to Chinatown.\u00a0\u00a0After a brief stop in Sacramento our next destination\u00a0is Houston, which I suspect will have less\u00a0to offer in terms of Japanese sweets though I will certainly be on the lookout…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
