She     starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese,   and  here    she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends   together  with  her   own observations.<\/strong><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/thedailyshow.mtvnimages.com\/images\/shows\/tds\/videos\/season_14\/14147\/ds_14147_03_v6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other night I had the pleasure of meeting the author Jake Adelstein (pictured here on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailyshow.com\/watch\/mon-november-16-2009\/jake-adelstein\">Daily Show<\/a>) who wrote the sensational book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/catalog\/display.pperl?isbn=9780307378798\">Tokyo Vice<\/a>, the story of his time as a crime reporter in Japan.\u00a0 This absorbing memoir traces his path from Sophia University student to full-time reporter at the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, a notable feat for a foreigner.\u00a0 He spent 12 years covering the underbelly of Japan, and as expected the bulk of his talk concentrated on the <em>yakuza<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He discussed how this Japanese mafia is known as a second police force, or a necessary evil (\u5fc5\u8981\u306a\u60aa<em> <\/em>or <em>hitsuyou na aku). <\/em>As tracked by the police they number <!--more-->86,000 and have 986 front companies in Tokyo.\u00a0 In Japan, there were no organized crime laws until 1992, and even now there is limited wiretapping and no witness protection\/relocation, quite different from the States in this respect.\u00a0 Adelstein also highlighted other interesting cultural differences such as the fact that there are even <em>yakuza<\/em> fan magazines, which have articles profiling members as well as photo essay series with them as subjects!\u00a0 As a crime reporter an important aspect of his job was reading these publications to keep up-to-date on the <em>yakuza<\/em> world.<\/p>\n<p>Several questions from the audience focused on the collusion between Japanese corporations and the <em>yakuza<\/em>, and Adelstein said that it was highly possible that many companies cooperate with one <em>yakuza<\/em> group to protect them from others.\u00a0 Also, ex-<em>yakuza<\/em> are often hired as corporate consultants.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a timely topic considering the speculation that Fujitsu&#8217;s former President\u00a0 was ousted because of alleged gangster ties.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052702304198004575172860857404290.html\">an article in today&#8217;s Wall Street Journal<\/a>, it has been confirmed that this has been taken to court and is currently being battled over.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken CIR, 2000-03).
