font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> <\/span><\/span><em>obser<\/em><em>vat<\/em><em>ions.<\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10204\" title=\"IMG_4047\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4047-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4047\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4047-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4047-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4047.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My travels currently bring me to Rochester, NY, and this morning at the local museum and science center I encountered an unexpected aspect of grassroots exchange between Japan and America.\u00a0 My Japanese guests and I met with Mr. George McIntosh, Director of Collections, and headed down into the vault to get a closer look at the Japanese Ambassador Doll housed there.\u00a0 Her name is Tamako and she hails from Nagasaki Prefecture, and she was part of a gift from Japan in return for nearly 13,000 <a href=\"http:\/\/wgordon.web.wesleyan.edu\/dolls\/american\/index.htm\">friendship dolls<\/a> sent over in early 1927 by the Committee on World Friendship Among Children.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10205\" title=\"IMG_4048\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4048-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4048\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4048-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4048-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4048.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This committee was formed by Dr. Sidney Gulick in 1926 as a reaction to restrictive American<!--more--> immigration policies and the desire for more friendship between America and Japan.\u00a0 Even though not all of the American dolls had blue eyes, they received the name &#8220;blue-eyed dolls&#8221; (\u9752\u3044\u76ee\u306e\u4eba\u5f62 or <em>aoime no ningyou<\/em>) based on a song from 1921.\u00a0 I had never heard this story before, but one of my participants knew it well.\u00a0 She regaled Mr. McIntosh with <a href=\"http:\/\/wgordon.web.wesleyan.edu\/dolls\/american\/b-edollsong.htm\">this tune<\/a>, which spoke of the American dolls asking Japanese <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10209\" title=\"IMG_4049\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40491-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4049\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40491-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40491-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40491.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>children for kindness upon arrival on their shore.<\/p>\n<p>These children then took it upon themselves to raise money to send 58 Ambassador Dolls back to America, one for each of the 48 states and 10 major cities.\u00a0 They arrived in November of 1927 and<em><strong><a href=\"..\/category\/wit-life\/\"><em><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10211\" title=\"IMG_4051\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4051-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4051\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4051-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4051-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4051.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em> toured the country before finding their permanent homes in places such as Rochester, which received Tamako.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting part of this collection is a <em>kamishibai<\/em> or paper theater which was created by Japanese schoolchildren when Tamako paid a visit to her home country.\u00a0 It is entitled &#8220;One Doll&#8217;s Story.&#8221;\u00a0 This second image on the left shows the Ambassador Dolls making their way over to America (land of Christmas trees?).\u00a0 The third on the right below shows them welcoming Tamako when she returns home.\u00a0 The final two (on the left below) are of Tamako and her fellow Ambassador Dolls on the way to their respective destinations (Rochester, New York, and Washington DC) and a gathering of several of the new blue-eyed dolls (Monica, Anna, Naomi, Kendra, Maria and Jessica).<\/p>\n<p>I found this whole sto<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10212 alignleft\" title=\"IMG_4052\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4052-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4052\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4052-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4052-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_4052.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>ry fascinating, as previously the only Japan\/America exchange that I knew of on this level was the DC sakura trees.\u00a0 I wonder where the rest of the Ambassador Dolls are making their homes these days, and when their next reunion in Japan will be (They are sent back periodically to be put on display).\u00a0 By the way, for those who are interested in learning more about <em>kamishibai,<\/em> check out Eric Nash&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abramsbooks.com\/Books\/Manga_Kamishibai-9780810953031.html\">Manga Kamishibai<\/a> for an in-depth look at this amazing Japanese art (full disclosure: I served as his translator\/interpreter).\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-10215\" title=\"IMG_4053\" src=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40531-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4053\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40531-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40531-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jetwit.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/IMG_40531.JPG 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Happy hunting!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WITLife is a periodic series written by professional Writer\/Interpreter\/Translator Stacy Smith (Kumamoto-ken, 2000-03).\u00a0 She starts her day by watching Fujisankei\u2019s newscast in Japanese, and here she shares some of the interesting tidbits and trends together with her own observations.
