Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend and that you’re all enjoying autumn. Let’s take a peek at what our favorite JET bloggers have been posting lately.

JET alum Suzanne Kamata (Tokushima-ken, 1988-90) at Gaijin Mama shares a decidedly Japanese first in twenty one years of living in Japan, as well as an eye opening take on a day with a wheelchair in Japan.

Kevin Kajitani (Kyogo-ken, 2006-07) over at iSpeakJapanese has moved to Japan – check out the first video from his new home here.

JET alum Lars Martinson finishes up his series on the beauty of East Asian calligraphy. Check out part one and part two.

Here’s another delici4098807470_f29b12a88aous recipe derived from a productive bout of insomnia from Elizabeth White (Toyama-ken, 1995-98), adventure writer.

Just in time for the holidays – JET alum Chen Reichert has new holiday cards at botodesigns.

She is now working as a freelance strategist and writer in New York and relishes her constant hunt for the best cheap(ish) eats in the city.

Happy October, everyone. It’s been awhile, so let’s take a look and make sure you have a chance to catch up on some posts you might’ve missed in September:

Interesting post from Suzanne Kamata (Tokushima-ken, 1988-90) over at Gaijin Mama about her son’s Japanese education – this should be enlightening for former JETs since we’ve had a chance to work on the other side of the teaching equation, but likely never had a chance to interact with parents.

Over at Chin Music Press, exciting things are happening as they get set to ship their latest publication. The book will literally be hot off the presses shortly, so be sure to check back for updates!

James Kennedy (Nara-ken, 2004-06) visits his teen fans at the Schaumburg Library, and it looks like some funny stuff went down.

We also covered JET alum Janice Momoko Chow (Saitama, 2005-2006) here a few posts back, and wanted to make sure that you all knew about her recent blog move to this site.

Finally, if you’re looking for a culinary reason to celebrate autumn while conveniently warding off any pesky autumn germs all at the same time, Elizabeth White (Toyama-ken, 1995-98) has the recipe for you. Looks delicious! Spicy+Chicken+Soup

From the family of JET alum Toby Weymiller in Hokkaido, they share a lovely post about the amazing Shibuya-san, a coffee proprietor in their town who has just offered the use of his tools for them to mix mortar. How cool is that?

If you’re in Canada, catch author Rob Weston (Nara-ken, 2002-04) at your local Word on the Street festival -  better yet, if you’re in Toronto, catch him at his appearance there on Sept. 27.

As I’m sure you’ve heard, the Mr. James campaign in McDonald’s has caused quite an uproar. See JET alum Jamie Pattersons take here. And if that’s not enough to sate your appetite for surreal Japanese advertising, JET alum cartoonist Lars Martinson shares a gem from the archives.

Maple Bacon LatteEnding on a delectable and enviable note, Lee-Sean Huang (Oita-ken, 2003-2006) follows in Anthony Bourdain’s footsteps and checks out a delicious sounding Maple Bacon Latte at the Pirate Cat Radio Café in SF’s Mission District.

Interesting post from Dave Jacobson over at Chin Music Press about the continuing lack of interest in Japan as a news story from mainstream media, despite it being the world’s second largest economy. Dave points out that this is a great opportunity for the smaller companies and bloggers who continue to produce great content on Japan. We here over at Blog Beat would be interested to hear your thoughts on this trend – Have you noticed this as well? What does it mean for Japan?Toby's+018

JET alum Toby Weymiller reports on the progress on his new house from Hokkaido – how extremely cool to track the construction of a new home!

Also, check out a new addition to our blogroll  – adventure writer Elizabeth White (Toyama-ken, 1995-98), lives in San Luis Obispo County and her new blog is well worth reading as it details all the delicious delights of life in paradise (and its challenges, of course) with great writing and photos.

Congratulations to Robert P. Weston (Nara-ken, 2002-04), the Toronto-based author of the rhyming children’s novel Zorgamazoo, who has just announced that Zorgamazoo has been selected as a contender in One Book One Brampton.

isshoniHeaderJust learned about a terrific blog and resource for UK-oriented JET alums called Isshoni London (http://www.isshonilondon.co.uk/), “the Gateway to Japanese London.”  And the best part is it’s written by JET alum Vanessa Villalobos who is also the Communications Officer for JETAA UK.

The site include:

As well as listing of evens covering everything from a Japanese/English meetup picnic in Greenwich to an Okinawa festival to a manga signing event.

You can also follow Isshoni London on Twitter (http://twitter.com/IsshoniVanessa), and Vanessa helpfully includes a list of the “Top Japan-related people to follow on Twitter.”

BlogBeat recently spoke with JET alum Janice Momoko Chow (Saitama, 2005-2006), a New York based-brand consultant and strategist about her blog.

img_3557A brand new addition to our blogroll, Janice describes Momoko Mashups as a place for her “thoughts and musings on fashion & style, art & design, technology & innovation, sustainability, New York City, and how everything transcends into culture and our everyday perceptions.” The site was created a year ago and continues to evolve as she adds new bits and pieces from her continuous quest for fun and fresh things to explore around the world.

Hailing from sunny Temple City in Southern California, Janice studied Brand Development and Psychology at the University of California-San Diego. While living and working in Tokyo, she fell in love with a life immersed in fashion, contemporary art, and design while working as a brand consultant for a range of clients, including Levi Strauss.

“It was an incredible experience,” she says. “I explored and tasted many different things that I wouldn’t normally be interested in. I sought after the latest sho chu spirits, sustainable electronic batteries, talked to the boys and girls who notoriously hang out in Harajuku, chatted with art students, and visited the denim mills south of Osaka.

Janice is now working on developing a communications and brand strategy for artist Suzy Taekyung Kim, while also working on ongoing projects from The Lambesis Agency as a brand consultant. You can find more about her work here.

JetWit Blog Beat is a recurring item featuring posts from the blogs of various JET alumni.  Guest poster Kelly Nixon (Iwate, 2003-06) currently works in Administration for Japan Airlines and serves as Treasurer for the JET Alumni Association of New York.
Since this is my first time posting for the JetWit Blog Beat it seems appropriate to introduce both myself as well as a lot of great new JET blogs at the same time.

Hello!  I’m Kelly – RSS feed fiend and fellow former Iwate ALT (indeed, just like the Blog Beat’s own Crystal Wong!).  Fret not, Crystal has not forsaken the JET blogosphere.  There are just so many blogs to keep up with that I have offered to lend her a hand on occasion.

Now to get on to the goods – more new blogs than you can shake a stick at!

* A favorite blog of mine and one that I personally recommended for the blog roll is Japandra.  This little treasure-trove of a blog is brought to you by Sandra, a NY expat and JET alum currently living in Tokyo, who has keen eye for those little irregular hilarities which sneak into the Japanese landscape.  What are you waiting for?  That fuzzy natsukashii “Haha, only in Japan!” feeling is just a click away…

* Sean Sakamoto of I’d Rather Be in Japan lives it up in the wild and wondrous beauty of Gifu.  In one of his most recent posts he brings the forest to us in an excellent home-made video series on how to harvest, prepare, and enjoy eating…bamboo!

* Next up is Jason’s Adventures in Rural Japan (aka Shimane).  Although Jason is currently packing up to return to the U.S., his blog is a great place to peruse his selection of the past year’s omoshiroi Japanese YouTube videos.

* Are you a prospective JET itching to find more information about the JET teaching experience in rural areas?  If so (or even if not!), check out Mel’s Adventures in Japan.

* Take some time to enjoy the comedic writing style of Steve Rogers, a lover of all things list-worthy (he even writes lists… about lists!), who does very well keeping his sense of humor while enduring Northern Tohoku Exposure.

* D. Freeman – photographer, web guru, and writer – takes his readers on a myriad of viral-worthy adventures.  Check his site to find out what is the What-What on the interweb today.

* Finally, we would like to introduce another successful JET writer Christy Burne (Hyogo-ken) who has just been given the first Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices book award, an award that aims to celebrate cultural diversity in children’s literature.  Her book, Takeshita Demons, will be published next year and is based on the adventures of a Japanese schoolgirl named Miku.  Be sure to keep up with all the exciting developments for Christy!

The shift from spring into summer seems as good a time as any to take stock of where you’re at with your goals as we hit the six month mark for 2009. Or better yet, maybe it’s just time to take a break from the grind and go on a much needed vacation. Either way, we see all these themes at play here at Blog Beat as we go through the blogroll.

Take a peek at some of the JET alumni reporting from their divergent paths:

From Tokyo, Lars Martinson gives us insight into the name behind a Japanese indie rock band.

Kevin and Aaron share tips on traveling in Japan.

Lee-Sean Huang (Oita-ken, 2003-2006) is headed west for a summer internship.

A house grows in Japan: JET alum Toby Weymiller shows us the adventure of building his own home.

We have an awesome new addition to the blog roll, from JET alum Toby Weymiller, currently residing in lovely Hokkaido with his wife Maiko and cat Bomber. He has some amazing photos up of his new house to be, and is also organizing workshops around each phase of the house build. Check it out if you’re lucky enough to be in the neighborhood.

Writer Kelly Luce (Kawasaki, 2002-2003) is another recent addition to the blogroll. Follow her literary adventures here.

Author Suzanne Kamata, (Tokushima-ken, 1988-90) shares news of her winning weekend in Tokyo, where she found out that both her books, Call Me Okaasan and Losing Kei were nominees in the 2009 Next Generation Indie Book Awards  right on the heels of the launch party for her new book.

Professional translator Joel Dechant (CIR Fukuoka-ken, 2001-04) recently became a guest blogger for Fukuoka Now (http://fukuokanow.wordpress.com).  Have a look at his first post on the site:

Bean paste, dumplings and beans...oh my!

Bean paste, dumplings and beans...oh my!

Hi, my name is Joel. I’m  from Pennsylvania in the US and have been living in Ropponmatsu since 2007. I majored in Japanese at university, spent a year abroad in Kyoto, and have been in Japan since graduating in 2000. I’ve lived in Osaka, Kirishima (Kagoshima), and Beppu, and after turning freelance, I decided to make Fukuoka my home base. I’m a translator by day, a bluesman by night and the Guest Blogger du jour. Today I’d like to talk about bean paste.

It’s been about 10 years since I first came to Japan and I fondly remember my maiden voyage as a study abroad student. My scholarship covered my airfare on a luxurious JAL flight complete with beautiful cabin attendants and a smoking section (I don’t smoke anymore, but back then I was in heaven). I don’t recall the food, however, because of traumatic desert experience. Something akin to a soft, delicious jelly donut was daintily laid on my plate, and after smoking who knows how many cigarettes, I was ready to tuck into that “donut”.

CHOMP!

WTF?!

ACK!!

Hello JetWit readers! Blog Beat was on a brief spring hiatus, but we have a lot to catch up on as JET alumni everywhere have been clearly very busy this spring.

Undoubtedly one of the coolest cakes ever – James Kennedy lauds his fans in a recent post, and with good reason, as these are original and wonderful ways to see his work appreciated.  (James’ editor is reported to have commented, “That is simultaneously the most impressive and least appetizing cake I have ever seen.”)

Another new addition to the blogroll - Suzanne (Borsum) Kamata (Tokushima, 1988-90) is the author of the novel Losing Kei (Leapfrog Press, 2008), a picture book, Playing for Papa (Topka Books, 2008) and the editor of three anthologies. We welcome her to Blog Beat and look forward to cheering for her little Tiger during his adventures in Japanese baseball.

JET alum Chen Reichert shares thoughts and photos from her first craft show of the season during Sakura Sunday, the biggest event during the Philly Cherry Blossom Festival. Sounds like it was a smashing success!

Check out Lee-Sean Huang’s (Oita-ken, 2003-06) intriguing final project for his Visual Music and Animals, et al. classes.

JET alum Lars Martinson is hard at work on the sequel to his graphic novel Tonoharu – read a complete rundown of his progress here.

Bruce Rutledge of Chin Music Press reveals a few more tantalizing sneak peeks at the upcoming Oh! by Todd Shimoda.

Finally, we’d like to report that Rose Symotiuk (Hokkaido, 2003-2005) just got married in Poland a few days ago! Congratulations Rose!!
