Under the leadership of the Vice President of External Affairs and Enrollment Management works collaboratively with various constituencies on campus and off campus to meet the needs of Mid-Pacific’s international student population. The International Student Coordinator serves as an advocate to the international student community and assists students and their families with connecting to the appropriate resources within the school and community. He/she will additionally serve as a liaison and a source of information for international students and ensure that campus services are responsive to the needs of these students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Family Relations: 50%

  • Serves as a main point of contact and source of information for international students and parents, homestay families/guardians, and international alumni.
  • Provides individual counseling using a cross-cultural perspective on matters relating to pre-arrival, arrival and adjustment to Hawaii.
  • Facilitates students’ entry into and adjustment to Mid-Pacific by developing positive relationships with students and their families. Counsels students and families of requirements specific to the school.
  • Provides support and acts as advocate on behalf of students in contact with grade level deans, principals, teachers and parents/guardians to facilitate the successful integration into the American school system.
  • Collaborates with the English Language Development Department Chair to implement orientation and integration programs for new families.
  • Acts as Homestay coordinator, identifying housing for students needing a homestay and facilitates the process between the host family and student family. Regularly reviews and updates as necessary homestay policies and procedures. Coordinates activities related to homestay in coordination with the Vice President of External Affairs & Enrollment Management.
  • Liaison to the school counseling program when students experience cross-cultural, family or personal crisis which may impact academic performance. Helps students to identify and access appropriate resources.
  • Facilitates communication from Home-School-Student to ensure consistent understanding between student and school. Assists school counseling between parent and counselor conferences as needed.

Admissions:  20%

  • Assists with developing recruitment material as well as other relevant application information to encourage international student application.
  • Organizes outreach events and activities for recruitment of students, mainly from Asia, promoting the school among various international populations.
  • Assists with answering questions and guiding prospective families through the application process and gives campus tours to international families and other visitors to campus.
  • Serves as the primary immigration point of contact as a Designated School Official and assists with F-1 paperwork related to the admissions and immigration process.
  • Helps students and their families navigate through the requirements for student or nonimmigrant visas. Stays abreast of immigration laws relating to various visas.
  • Works with admissions and enrollment management to develop strategies to support student retention.
  • Serves on the international admissions review team to make decisions on international applicants through the admissions process.
  • Represents the school at various events and maintains good relationships with other schools in Hawaii.

Student Liaison: 20%

  • Supports the school college counselors, deans, and English language development teachers in evaluating student academic history, developing academic and career goals and outlining specific classes or resources needed to achieve these goals.
  • Communicates regularly with teachers and administration regarding academic or personal issues the International Student Coordinator is aware of through family, homestay, or other updates on a particular student.
  • Creates communication avenues with families to assist with processes and procedures throughout Mid-Pacific, including college admissions.
  • Leads student groups such as the globetrotters club, international student leaders and global ambassadors as well as campus opportunities for involvement in coordination with the English Language Development Faculty.
  • Develops short-term exchange programs for students and teachers from visiting partner schools and acts as main point of contact for partner schools.
  • Represents the international student community in the schools strategic planning process to help align school goals with the international community.

 Institutional Advancement: 10%

  • Collaborates with Institutional Advancement office to organize overseas gatherings and meetings with families and alumni.
  • Provides information and contact reports for more research on prospective donor families.
  • Builds strong relationships with current and former international students and their families and advises the Institutional Advancement office of prospective donors.
  • Assists institutional advancement office in bridging the cultural gap when relating to families and building relationships.
  • Communicates both orally and in writing, about strategic fundraising and programmatic activities to international families.
  • Works closely with Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Major Gifts Officer to assist with in-person fundraising solicitations.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

  • Experience in intercultural communication and working in an educational environment advising students and their families.
  • Ability to effectively work with students of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of immigration rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of community resources for appropriate referrals.
  • Skill in delivering public presentations. ▪ Ability to travel as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college.
  • A minimum of three to seven years of experience working with international students in a similar position preferably for an independent school.
  • Prefer fluency in a minimum of one Asian language including Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Korean.
  • Experience living/working in Asia is preferable.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with diverse cultures, including local, national and international.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, public speaking and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Team player with ability to gain trust and confidence with colleagues and constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Self-directed, motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment while producing high-quality work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information with the highest professional and ethical standards.
  • Flexibility to meet job requirements beyond the school day, unexpected demands and the ability to travel as needed.
  • Proven ability using technology and database programs. Knowledge of Google Suite.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Our campus consists of multiple buildings on 44 hilly acres that requires frequent walking including uphill and stairs.  The individual is required to talk and hear, often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Vision abilities required include close vision.

MENTAL DEMANDS: On a daily basis employee must frequently problem solve, make decisions, supervise, interpret data, organize, write, plan, and clearly communicate.
