Position: Language Instructors for CIEE Tokyo High School Summer Abroad Programs, 2019 (Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels)

Reports To: Director, CIEE Tokyo

Program Description: CIEE is offering two four-week long language and culture summer programs in Tokyo for US high school students. Through language study, interacting with locals and peers, and participating in organized cultural activities and excursions, students will have an unforgettable and potentially life-changing study abroad experience.

Program Location: National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, Japan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete the curriculum training prior to the program start date, learning the curriculum’s concepts as well as how to use the Canvas platform (online system for managing assignments, grades, communication, and other learning components).
  • Teach Japanese language to US high school students for approximately 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks, using CIEE’s language curriculum.
  • Plan and prepare for each day including development of task-based activities that help students meet learning objectives (“can do” statements).
  • Work with CIEE Program Leaders and onsite staff to ensure effective communication and curriculum integration into the overall program. This includes coordinating with Program Leaders on “Into the Community” communication activities with locals.
  • Meet with co-Instructors and Program Leaders periodically to ensure the students are meeting goals and the program standards are being met
  • Serve as the primary contact regarding any curriculum-based matter for the level you teach
  • Provide CIEE with valuable feedback in English on the curriculum at the end of each session of the program in a format agreed upon before the start of the program
  • At the end of the program, participate in program de-brief, safety assessments, curriculum assessments and evaluations
  • Complete CIEE’s training course on Health, Safety, and Security prior to the program start. Abide by CIEE’s policies and expectations regarding the health, safety, and security of students.

Program Dates:

  • Session 1: June 10 to July 7, 2019 (4 weeks)
  • Session 2: July 8 to August 4, 2019 (4 weeks)
  • (Teachers may teach one or both sessions.)
  • (Teachers must complete training prior to the program start date.)

Position Requirements / Qualifications

  • One or more years of teaching Japanese language and culture.
    • Experience teaching US High School students (ages 15 to 18) a plus.
    • Experience teaching communicative and task-based teaching methods a plus
  • Master’s Degree or comparable combination of qualifications and experience
  • Desire to work with and teach high school aged students
  • Proficiency in English
  • Native or near-native level Japanese
  • Possess and demonstrate strong skills in leadership and intercultural communication
  • Possess and demonstrate creativity and a passion for language, education, and international exchange
