Jessica Burbach (Shiga 2011-2013) is a former Vice President of JETAADC and an Associate Marketing Manager at Toys”R”Us. “Life After Geoffrey” is a series on what it’s like to live through the end of a beloved brand. She is looking for new career opportunities for her own life after Geoffrey. Contact her via LinkedIn.

My last day at the Toys”R”Us office was emotional but above all, surprising practical. In the morning our HR team held a career fair for us with over 40 companies in attendance. Hundreds of employees showed up, all trying to make connections. Representatives from the local government were on hand to explain the ins and outs of drawing unemployment.

Later that afternoon, I sent off my very last email, turned in my computer and drove away from the campus one last time. While all corporate employees will receive 60 days of pay and are still employed by Toys”R”Us until May, many of us are no longer required to be physically present at the office as our functions are no longer needed. We are still on call in case a business need arises but are able to work from home and use the time to look for jobs.

People always say that things like this happen for a reason. I’m still trying to figure out that reason for me. Perhaps it’s time to make the change I’ve been wanting to do for a while and switch industries to work in media or entertainment. Either way, life after Geoffrey promises a chance to land somewhere new and exciting.
