John Jay has established a new Center focused on serving the needs of their immigrant, undocumented, and DACA students. Therefore, an Immigrant Student Success Manager is needed at both, John Jay and within CUNY. The new opening was just posted and will close on January 10, 2018. Please see below for more details.

POSITION OVERVIEW

John Jay is proud to be establishing a new on-campus New America Student Support Center that will employ a variety of strategies to provide academic, career, scholarship and social support for students who may be undocumented, immigrants (including students with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), Temporary Protected Status (TPS), work permits, or refugee status, or who possesses other visas unrelated to international study), or coming from mixed immigration status families.  In a newly created role at John Jay and within the CUNY system, the Immigrant Student Success Manager will lead the Center and conceive and implement programming to assist these students in overcoming the unique academic, career, personal, and professional challenges they may encounter as college students.

Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Immigrant Student Success Manager will design programming focused on three key interventions to meet the unique needs of these students:

  • Providing Student Support:  The Manager will conduct direct student outreach, provide mentorship, and develop programming and structures (including a peer leadership program) aimed at boosting retention and degree completion for undocumented and immigrant students.  The Manager will also develop programming in the Center to create a safe space on campus for students and connect students with reliable campus and community-based services in areas related to financial aid, legal services, academics, crisis support, and wellness and emotional support.
  • Facilitating Access to Legal Services:  Leveraging partnerships with trusted external legal service providers with immigration law expertise, the Manager will facilitate the provision of free direct immigration legal services to John Jay College students, their families, and members of the community. Such legal assistance will include help filing immigration petitions, legal consultations to determine immigration benefit eligibility, and referrals for more complex immigration matters.
  • Serving as a Trusted Campus Resource:  The Manager will also collaborate across the College to help strengthen the diversity and inclusivity of our campus by working with other divisions, including, in particular, Academic Affairs, to develop training and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff in order to help them support the success of students regardless of immigration status.  The Manager will also organize and conduct workshops and information sessions and develop and share relevant information and resources with immigrant and undocumented students as well as the broader John Jay community.

The Immigrant Student Success Manager will accomplish these goals and support immigrant student success through activities such as:

  • Providing leadership, management, and vision for direct student outreach and services supporting retention and completion for undocumented students;
  • Providing students with support services, academic and career advising, informal mentorship, and referral to other CUNY and external resources to assist with issues including financial aid, legal services, academics, crisis support, wellness and emotional support;

  • Developing and maintaining professional campus relationships and collaborations across departments including Academic Affairs and Financial Aid in order to improve outcomes related to the inclusion, retention, and graduation of immigrant and undocumented students;

  • Acting as a confidential case manager for undocumented student issues including assessing academic and personal needs and assisting students who may be in crisis or off-track to graduation;
  • Collaborating with student clubs and working with undocumented students to increase their academic and social integration into the College by creating and implementing programs;
  • Advocating for policy and practice changes across the College to ensure an undocumented student-friendly College;
  • Developing relationships and collaborating with local agencies and community organizations to provide students with additional avenues to access resources and programming.
