Summary

The SSRC invites applications for the position of a Communications/Editorial Assistant to work closely with the African Peacebuilding Network on a broad range of editorial and communication-related activities.

Description

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications.

The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) promotes independent African research and analysis on peacebuilding in or near countries and regions affected by violent conflict on the continent. It seeks to infiltrate that knowledge with those who can play an important role in the shaping of an Africa-centered peacebuilding agenda, including global and regional centers of scholarly analysis and practical action as well as key policymakers at the United Nations and other multilateral, regional, and national policymaking institutions. The SSRC invites applications for the position of a Communications/Editorial Assistant to work closely with the African Peacebuilding Network on a broad range of editorial and communication-related activities. The ideal candidate will have the skills (writing, editing, new media proficiency) to produce high-quality web content while also being able to provide additional support in the areas of design/branding, media relations, and event management, as well as to perform related tasks, as directed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (creative writing/journalism/public affairs/communication background preferred).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, assume responsibility, work independently, and respond flexibly to changing demands.
  • Team player who is also self-motivated and can work independently.
  • Knowledge of and interest in software and new media applications, such as Audacity, Photoshop, Illustrator, and MS Office.
  • Proficient in web publishing platforms, website maintenance, database management, and Internet resources; familiarity with HTML, CSS, and WordPress a plus.
  • Previous editorial and design experience desirable.
  • Interest in new media technologies helpful: blogging, podcasting, wikis, etc.
  • Interest in and knowledge of Africa and/or peace, security, and post-conflict development issues a plus.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally, if required.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and edit APN publications and online content according to standards of The Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA, etc.
  • Support APN program staff with regard to publicity and communication.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining the APN’s social media channels on a daily basis (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn accounts); manage the website, Kujenga Amani, podcasts, and postings.
  • Assist in digital media projects, curating, and content; track and report social media metrics.
  • Create and maintain design assets (i.e., graphics, photos, videos, Flickr albums).
  • Edit/update traditional program collateral such as working papers, policy briefs, and other print materials.
  • Manage the visual presentation of all program print and electronic materials, such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, website, etc.
  • Manage APN contact and guest lists; assist with communications with alumni, grantees, and partner organizations.
  • Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed, depending upon interest and capacity.

Terms, Salary, and Benefits

Annual salary is $40,000. Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, vision, disability, life, and gym reimbursement; $1,500 annual tuition and/or student loan reimbursement; outstanding pension plan and tax savings programs; generous vacation and sick leave; and more.
