Japan Society seeks an innovative and hands-on Chief Development Officer to lead and expand Development efforts, including: securing major gifts, maintaining productive relationships with Board members, and overseeing all fundraising efforts directed toward individuals, foundations, members, corporations and other potential funding sources. The CDO will work closely with the President of Japan Society, the Vice President of Finance and Administration, and the Board of Directors, as well as Program Directors, to fulfill ambitious fundraising goals, which include a combined annual goal of $7 million.

The main areas of responsibilities include:

  • Board Development and Relations: Develop and grow relationships with the Board of Directors, and draw upon their talents and resources to enhance fundraising and community relations. Coordinate communications with the Board and Board sub-committees; organize and prepare materials, reports and financial briefings for regular Board Standing Committee meetings with a focus on strategies and outcomes.
  • Fundraising: Direct fundraising efforts, including establishing a strategic plan for fundraising and development activities, and ensure that goals are established and met. Provide hands-on oversight of Corporate, Government and Foundation, Individual Giving, and Membership functions, as well as the Society’s annual dinner and other special events. Build and cultivate a portfolio of high net-worth donor prospects, and design and implement in-person meeting plans to ensure that the President and Development staff meet with donors and potential funders on an ongoing basis.
  • Leadership: Manage a direct staff of six and overall staff of 17. Lead, motivate, and mentor Development staff, and maintain excellent collaborative working relations with program staff and other staff across the Society. Work with the Media and Marketing team to ensure Japan Society’s public face – online and through the media – is consistent with achieving the Society’s mission and fundraising goals. Partner with the President and the Vice President of Finance and Administration, playing a significant role in overall strategic planning and policy formation for the Society.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an active, hands-on leader and team-builder with outstanding managerial, communication and relationship-building skills. The CDO must have a proven track record in fundraising, with demonstrated success in strengthening board, corporate and donor relations, and achieving measurable results in revenues generated or funds raised. The CDO will have a highly collaborative approach to working across all internal units of Japan Society, and the executive presence, commitment to the Society’s mission, and knowledge of Japanese culture, to serve as an ambassador of the Society.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, and a minimum of ten years senior-level managerial experience with expertise in strategic planning, board relations and development, fundraising, program-building, people and budget management
  • Managerial experience in a non-profit institution required
  • Strong track record in corporate giving including memberships and sponsorships
  • Experience with individual giving in the art world is a plus
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of Japanese business etiquette, customs and culture, and international issues
  • Knowledge and experience in fundraising ethics, research and cultivation practices, including proposal writing, gift processing, prospecting, and reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to network and build external relationships
  • Ability to manage staff and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of internal and external partners
  • Willing and able to travel, and attend evening and weekend events
  • Spoken Japanese language ability is a plus
