Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the national museum of modern and contemporary art, will be mounting a major exhibition featuring the work of contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. The exhibition, Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Rooms, will be open to the public for twelve weeks from February 23 to May 14, 2017, and is anticipated to draw record-breaking numbers of visitors to the Hirshhorn. The exhibition will include numerous, fragile paintings and sculptures by the artist, and will also contain 5 of the artist’s signature self-contained “Infinity Room” installations. In addition to the 5 “Infinity Rooms,” the exhibition consists of an interactive “Obliteration Room,” where visitors are invited to interact with the walls and furniture in the room.

Hirshhorn Guides are floor personel whose main objective is to support the day-to- day operations of the Kusama Exhibition: staff admissions/membership desks; provide information to and guide visitors; control visitor flow in the “Infinity Rooms;” and ensure efficient crowd control. Hirshhorn Guides’ assignments will bring them to work at numerous locations throughout the museum and the exhibit, and their duties may vary regularly. Floor personnel are required to follow the instructions, guidance, and direction of management personnel as they pertain to the policies, rules and procedures of the Museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Kusama Exhibit Floor Operations

  • Greet, check, and orient visitors into the exhibition
  • Clear and articulate verbal communications to national and international visitors
  • Provide customer service in a timely and responsive manner, ensuring easy and safe entrance and exit to the “Infinity Rooms” and “The Obliteration Room”
  • Manage and direct operations’ activities and set performance goals accordingly Ensure and maintain a safe and clean environment for visitors
  • Provide operational support for special events
  • Facilitate group entry and visit
  • Conduct detailed, daily surveys and reports of “Infinity Rooms” and “The Obliteration Room” visitation and maintenance needs
  • Perform line-busting activities, as necessary
  • Willingness to assist all museum departments when necessary
  • Respond to any public inquiries
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Membership

  • Explain membership benefits to potential members
  • Enthusiastically turn interest into membership sale, efficiently process the membership usingcard reader and membership database
  • Interact with members and Trustees who are checking in at the membership/VIP desk
  • Ability to calmly and pleasantly handle questions and concerns of members and VIPs
  • Conduct point of sale transactions

Qualifications/Skills Requirements

  • An outgoing, positive personality and a knack for connecting with people of many backgrounds
  • An interest for modern and contemporary art and museums
  • Ability to use mobile technologies includes mobile pads and mobile payment technologies
  • High School diploma required; current college student or college degree preferred
  • Ability to work holidays, weekends, and a majority of closing shifts (generally ending between 5:45 and 7:30pm)
  • Ability to stand and/or move for extended periods of time, inside and outside of the building
  • Ability to make quick decisions and adapt to changing environments
  • Determination to be punctual, wear a uniform, and maintain a professional appearance
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs

Preferences

  • Strong, previous visitor services experience in high-volume attraction/environment
  • Previous experience in customer relations and/or public speaking
  • A natural ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to visitors and museum staff
  • Ability to speak fluently and write in a second language (French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, or German)

Additional Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to collect information, analyze data, and write reports

General Information

  • This is an hourly, contract-based seasonal position
  • Hourly rate offered range $15-$18/hour based on experience
  • Anticipated contract duration: four (4) months
