The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan is looking for someone excited to develop skills in the area of policy or government affairs. This person would work with the External Affairs Manager for U.S. Government Affairs in the execution of the ACCJ’s advocacy work by providing content-related, logistical, and administrative support.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to monitoring U.S.government related news and periodically briefing members and staff on critical issues, drafting public communications, proofreading and editing advocacy documents, tracking the rotation of U.S. Embassy officials, and updating and maintaining the ACCJ External Affairs database.

The EAC must work under tight deadlines, manage multiple tasks and make frequent contact with business leaders and government officials. This requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and communications skills, and the ability to maintain good humor and a positive attitude.

Established in 1948 by representatives of 40 American firms, the ACCJ, a fully independent chamber of commerce, has grown into the most influential foreign business organization in Japan, with approximately 3,000 members representing over 40 countries and 1,000 companies. A non-profit organization with over 60 committees that produced over 30 advocacy documents in 2015, working for the ACCJ requires a strategic mindset and great attention to detail. Successful employees gain experience with Japan’s greatest international business and policy network.

Responsibilities:

  • Content and administrative support for the advocacy process, including:
    • U.S. Government Briefings
    • Monthly ACCJ – U.S. Embassy Conferences
    • ACCJ Doorknocks (Diet, DC and mini-Doorknocks)
    • Assigned tasks related to ACCJ committees, groups and initiatives (including liaising with committee leadership)
    • Assisting with editing and proofreading of advocacy documents
  • Attending committee meetings, taking note of committee discussions related to advocacy, and sharing committee updates with External Affairs Team
  • Supporting the External Affairs Manager for U.S. Government Affairs in identifying opportunities for ACCJ input into USG activities, such as Congressional hearings, public comment and other written or personal testimony
  • Monitoring political/economic issues as relevant to member and staff needs
  • Drafting public communications on behalf of staff and members
  • Supporting the administration of the U.S. Embassy Liaison Program, which requires frequent communications with the U.S. Embassy, coordination with ACCJ members, and facilitation support with major events that involve U.S. Embassy Liaisons
  • Coordinating internal and external meetings and liaising other with ACCJ staff
  • Maintaining and updating the External Affairs database

Requirements:

  • Strong interest in developing skills in the area of policy and government affairs
  • Can work independently, with minimal supervision while also being a team player and collaborator
  • Professional experience in the public and/or private sector
  • Superior written and spoken communication skills
  • Native-level English, Japanese language skills a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • MS Office and basic computer literacy, proficiency in FileMaker Pro a plus
