Sapporo Kaisei Secondary School is seeking four teachers to join its school from October 2016. Theschool is a six-year (combined junior high and high) school. It is currently an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) candidate school with an aim to progress into offering the IB Diploma Programme (DP). The aim of this school is to produce self-motivated problem solving lifelong learners through an inquiry-based curriculum.

We are advertising for two English, an Art and a Music teacher to teach classes full time from April 2017. However, the successful applicant will be employed for a six-month paid training period from October 2016, with conditions similar to the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) Programme.

The successful candidate will have time to adapt to the school, write teaching programs and assist with other classes. Should the applicant demonstrate the ability to teach independently at the school, teachers will be employed from April 2017 by the Sapporo Board of Education with annual contracts in line with Japanese teachers. The four teachers’ main responsibility will be independently teaching their respective subjects from April 2017. As you can appreciate, the suitable applicant needs not only their specific subject area knowledge but the ability to teach English language.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Undergraduate studies in Art, Music or English
  • Three years of teaching or subject-related experience (experience on JET will be counted
  • Knowledge of Japan, Japanese work/ school environments and Japanese language (N2 – N1 as a general rule, however N3 with a demonstrated ability to improve in the Japanese language will
  • Applicants will also need to hold suitable teaching qualifications at the time of employment in October. While middle/ high school teaching qualifications are desirable, due to the nature of the position (teaching subject content through English) TESOL qualifications will also be considered. Desired Experience:

  • A willingness to live in Sapporo for the mid-long term
  • Experience which demonstrates a personal interest in Japan – the successful applicant will need to be a driving force behind curriculum change in Japan, while respecting Japanese values about education
  • Experience with, or knowledge of the International Baccalaureate Programme.
  • Experience in middle/ high schools in Japan and overseas.
  • Experience in using iPads, tablets or other technology in an educational setting. This would be an excellent opportunity for any teachers who are looking for exciting work in a progressive environment.
