Position: Teaching Assistant
Posted by: French Embassy
Location: France
Contract: Full-Time (7 month contract)

Teach English in France! Are you ready to expand your cultural horizons and share your language and culture with French students? The Teaching Assistant Program in France offers you the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages.

APIF offers positions in all regions of metropolitan France and in the overseas departments of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion. Applicants may indicate up to three regions of preference on their application. Accepted applicants receive placement in a specific French Académie (school district) at the time of acceptance notification in April.

Assistants are assigned a 12-hour per week teaching schedule that may be divided among up to three schools. Classes are conducted in English. The teaching assistant may conduct all or part of a class, typically leading conversations in English. Duties may include serving as a resource person in conversation groups, providing small group tutorials, and giving talks related to American studies in English classes. Contracts are available at the elementary or secondary school level

  • Elementary School – Children aged 8-11 years old. Assistant leads oral activities with small groups, or works alongside the teacher with the entire class present. Good level of French required.
  • Secondary School – Students aged 11-18 years old. Assistant serves as a resource person in conversation groups, provides small group tutorials, facilitates English-language clubs, or works alongside the teacher with the entire class present. Proficient level of French required.

Requirements

  •  Must have U.S citizenship or permanent residency (with valid green card). French nationals and French-American dual citizens are not eligible to apply.
  • Must be between 20 and 35 years old on the start date of the program (October 1, 2016).
  • Must have completed at least three years of higher education by October 1, 2016.
  • Must have completed the majority of your elementary, secondary and university studies in the United States.
  • Must be proficient in French. French majors and minors are encouraged. Applicants who do not have a major or minor in French may apply if they have at least a basic proficiency (~3 semesters) in French and/or have lived abroad in a Francophone country.
  • The selection process favors applicants who have prior experience teaching or working with children, adolescents, and/or adults. This is not required, but all applicants should demonstrate at least an interest in education.

Stipend: €965 (≈$1,022.15) per month GROSS, €790 (≈$836.72) per month NET. Due to the higher cost of living in the overseas departments, assistants in French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion receive an additional salary allowance of 30% to 35%.

The stipend provides enough money to live the lifestyle of a typical French student in most regions of France (but NOT Paris due to the very high cost of living in the capital region). No additional support is provided for travel to France or for dependents. Personal funds are needed for the initial period of the contract.

Housing: Assistants are responsible for making their own living arrangements. Some host schools are able to help assistants secure housing or make arrangements for the first few weeks in France, but this is NOT guaranteed. Assistants should plan on needing to find their own housing. The CIEP, the Embassy, and the school districts in France do offer a number of resources and suggestions during the summer on how and where search for housing.

Application: The application for the 2016-2017 program is available online at: https://www.tapif.org. The deadline is January 15, 2016.
