Are you interested in international travel, cultural exchange and Japanese customs? The New Brunswick Sister Cities Association currently seeks candidates interested in working as an International Cultural Ambassador to Fukui City in Japan.

The City of New Brunswick and Fukui City have been joined together through the international Sister Cities program for 32 years. As part of the program, Fukui City has invited cultural ambassadors from its Sister Cities to come work in Japan for the purpose of spreading cultural information. They teach English, arrange cultural exchange events, teach classes in the Fukui City schools and participate in a host family program.

Fukui City invites human resources mainly through the relationship with its sister cities to promote internationalization in Fukui City, Japan. These individuals will engage in promoting international understanding and conducting cultural exchange programs.

Responsibilities

  • Promote global understanding at elementary schools (approximately 3 days/week), 300~350 classes/year
  • Provide activities for global understanding as part of General Studies for 3rd and 4th elementary school students
  • Promote global understanding and culture exchange for the citizens of Fukui at large
  • Hold classes at nursery schools and kindergartens in Fukui City (approximately 40times/a year)
  • Give presentations on global understanding to preschoolers
  • Participate in a host family program (1 or 2 times/year)
  • Stay with or visit families in Fukui City. Exchange with local citizens through participating in local events.
  • Hold classes at community centers (as needed)
  • Give presentations on global understanding, and teach language lessons at community centers and children’s centers upon request of Fukui International Association.
  • PR (as needed)
  • Spread information through Facebook, web site, Youtube, cable TV, radio and more.
  • Conduct English conversation lessons for city employees (once/a year)
  • Organize conversation lessons for city employees who are interested in or likely to use English
  • Attend seminars and meetings to obtain knowledge or skills needed to perform duties.
  • Participate in English Summer Camps and training seminars for foreign employees.
  • Assist with projects related to international activities carried out by Fukui City (as needed)
  • Editing and translating publications in English or Japanese; assisting and advising on international exchange programs; acting as a chaperon for the Junior Ambassador program; receiving guests from abroad and interpreting.

Requirements

  • Be interested in educational activities through the project to promote global understanding or English lessons in Japan and have desire to work for further promotion of sister city exchange between Fukui City and New Brunswick City. Those who or whose parents live in New Brunswick City, or commute to New Brunswick City will receive preferential consideration.
  • Be a native English speaker and have excellent English skills in pronunciation, speaking and writing
  • Have enough Japanese language skill to perform FCAs’ duties mentioned and to communicate smoothly with Japanese staff.Level-equivalent to at least JLPT level 2 is preferable. (Applicants will have their Japanese skill evaluated at the interview)
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree or be over 20 years old (as of August 1st, 2015) and attending four-year university. Applicants with a Bachelor degree, TESOL and/or English teaching experience will receive preferential consideration
  • Have a cooperative personality and be well skilled at communicating with preschool and elementary school students
  • Be of good mental and physical health
  • Have a driver’s license. (International Driver’s Permit is needed to be obtained before coming to Japan.) In Japan, obtaining Japanese driver’s license within on year is necessary (at your own expense, around 10 – 20,000 yen.).

Employment Conditions

  • Contract Period: 1 year (from August 1st, 2016 to July 31st, 2017); Fukui city will take FCAs performance into consideration and make a decision on whether or not to extend their contract in December 2016. FCAs may be re-contracted up to 3 years.
  • Working Days:Mon-Fri
  • Working Hours: 8:30am-5:15pm(lunch break from 12 noon-1pm Compensatory leave will be given to the FCA in the case they are requested to be on duties out of work hours and days.
  • Holidays Sat, Sun, public holiday and Dec.29-Jan.3
  • Paid holiday 20days/year

Salary and Other Allowances

  • Base salary: 300,000 yen/month gross / Approximately 260,000 yen/month net (Employment insurance, Employee pension and Health insurance will be withheld)
  • Commuter allowance: None
  • Housing allowance: Max. 27,000yen/month
  • Social insurance: Labor insurance, Employee pension, Health insurance
  • Retirement allowance: None
  • Salary raise:  None
  • Transportation to and from Fukui, Japan will be furnished to successful applicants.

Deadline: Application must arrive by January 29, 2016. The applicants who are selected though the initial screening will be invited to the interview in mid-Feb. Your interview will be videotaped and those of finalists will be reviewed by Fukui City for the final decision. Final results will be notified in late-March with duties beginning in August.
