Overview: 

The Mainichi Shimbun, Japan’s oldest daily newspaper, is looking for an Assistant Correspondent for its UK bureau, based in Soho. You will assist the London-based correspondents with researching and preparing articles published in our print newspaper and our Japanese and English websites. You will also be responsible for the day-to-day running of the office.

Applicants must be native English speakers and have a good command of spoken and written Japanese (preferably Japanese-Language Proficiency Test level N1, degree level, or equivalent). You should also be able to demonstrate a keen interest in news and current affairs, politics and, ideally, economics. Previous journalistic experience is not necessary, while proficiency in other European languages is desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Following breaking news and current affairs
  • Attending press briefings and meetings
  • Conducting interviews over the phone and in person
  • Assisting the planning of overseas trips by the correspondents
  • Assisting correspondents relocating from Japan to the UK and vice versa
  • Managing office social media accounts
  • Managing day-to-day office administration
  • Translation from Japanese to English

Qualifications:

  • Native-level English and advanced Japanese
  • Strong interest in news and current affairs
  • Strong research skills, with focus on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Good timekeeping and ability to work to deadlines
  • Good communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Other European languages
  • Good understanding of economics

The deadline for applications is  17:00, Tuesday 30th June. Interviews will take place during the first two weeks of July. The successful applicant will be expected to start mid-August 2015. Applicants must be able to prove they are eligible to live and work in the UK as we are unable to sponsor visa or work permit applications.
