Overview:

The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) is a non-profit organization (501 c 6) actively seeking to fill 2 Director level positions. This SPJA is ideal for someone seeking to make a difference in a fan-based community, providing not only operational support to the organization but help promote a positive work environment for both employees and volunteers.

(Position 1) Marketing Director

The Director of Marketing plans and directs marketing activities in conjunction with third party vendors contracted by the SPJA by personally performing/overseeing the following duties:

  • Branding: Ensuring organization’s image externally and internally is consistently portrayed in presentation of images, photos, written and verbal communications, and web design.
  • Advertising: Ensure appropriate communications and SPJA features are properly advertised via multiple platforms including, but not limited to: print, e-mail, and social media.
  • Business Development: Develop and maintain business relationships with both industry and non-industry related companies to build long term partnerships for sponsorship opportunities as well as exchange opportunities. Leverage existing relationships into partnership and promotions opportunities for the SPJA brand.
  • Press: Develop and maintain relationships with press & media contact both local and abroad to maximize public image presentation opportunities. Be the consistent point of contact for all press inquiries regarding SPJA.
  • Public Relations: Proactively and reactively creating communications to uphold a positive public image, and address potential concerns of the organization in a public arena.
  • Merchandising: Providing creative solutions to maximize revenue for event branded goods.
  • Market Research: Develop and maintain a system to maximize Research and Development opportunities through external surveying of target market, and internal analytics of data. Monitor and report trends to other SPJA directors.
  • Creative: Providing creative and artistic oversight on advertisement and event imaging.
  • Publications: Responsible for the editorial direction, design, production and distribution.
  • Event Marketing: Lead special projects to promote SPJA at various events including, but not limited to: press & industry socials, street team/guerilla marketing, and fan tables.
  • Budgeting: Develop short and long term plans for marketing related budgets. Maintain budget tracking for overseen budget in compliance with SPJA finance policies and procedures.
  • Management: Recruit and develop a team of volunteers to assist with Marketing needs year round and at SPJA events.

To perform the Director of Marketing job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. These requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required of a Director level.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work amicably with a variety of personalities while maintaining professionalism.
  • Above average written and oral communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality within the organization with a high level of personal ethics.
  • Managerial skills to appropriately delegate and direct staff and third party vendors.
  • High adaptability to changing needs.
  • High level of dependability without supervision.
  • Consistent demonstration of quality work and good judgment.
  • In good health, there is constant walking to supervise all the departments during the convention.
  • Flexible with strong communications skills under pressure.
  • Must live in Southern California with reliable, independent transportation.
  • Must be able to attend meetings, conferences and events (including social functions) as necessary.
  • Compliance with SPJA vision and direction as provided by higher levels of the organization including, but not limited to: specific deliverables states pre-event, budget, and internal policies.
  • Working knowledge of the Japanese language and culture preferred.

(Position 2) Entertainment Director

The Director of Entertainment plans and directs activities specifically pertaining to the Event Entertainment including, but not limited to: Interactive Events, Programming, AV Technical Production Support, and Guest Relations. This role requires the Director of Entertainment to personally perform/oversee the following duties:

  • Programming: Create, review and develop programming content for the Entertainment event.
  • Interactive Events: Ensure programs and activities designed for attendee participation adhere to high show and performance standards.
  • Scheduling: Review and revise program schedule of events on an as needed basis.
  • Talent Relations: Ensure details of Talent contracts are fulfilled, while maintaining high levels of concierge and customer service support.
  • Guest Relations: Provide necessary and ethical services to Event Guests of Honor to encourage a positive working relationship and image for the organization.
  • Customer Service: Provide high level customer and concierge services for panelists, industry guests, guests of honor and other Entertainment related invitees.
  • Show Production: Work in conjunction with facilities to maximize show production needs for guests with technical needs.

To perform the Director of Entertainment job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. These requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required of a Director of Entertainment.

  • A minimum of 2 international trips to initiate and further engage contacts abroad, unless financially restricted by the SPJA.
  • Compliance with budget as developed in conjunction with Finance.
  • Comfortable with exposure to explicit adult content.
