Overview:

The temporary Japanese Press & Community Relations Officer will work with the Media and Marketing Department to strategize, initiate, coordinate, and implement press-related initiatives for Japan Society, focusing mainly on Japanese media.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Seek out, cultivate, and maintain local, regional, national, and international media contacts, primarily Japanese language, serving as the main liaison at Japan Society. Assist with outreach to increase awareness of Japan Society amongst people in NY area through press coverage and event promotion.
  • Work closely with all departments to create Japanese-language press materials (press releases, fact sheets, photo tips, background info, etc). Assist in composing/editing Japanese press materials.
  • Maintain and generate press lists and mailing labels from databases as required. Organize Japanese language press materials. This includes determining appropriate package materials, preparing the package, and mailing.
  • Attend Society events when press members are in attendance, and work with event organizer to provide appropriate environments (audio feeding, TV camera space, etc).
  • Maintain public relations files and press clippings, and circulate press clippings or other press information as appropriate.
  • Facilitate press interview opportunities with Japan Society staff or guests, and provide information to assure accurate interview content.
  • Communicate and act as liaison with Japan related organizations to enhance communications/ field questions, and to facilitate collaborations with staff.
  • Organize and/or attend meetings with other organizations, follow up and maintain contacts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years related experience within arts & culture marketing and/or public relations
  • Japanese language skills and knowledge of Japanese culture
  • Strong Japanese writing skills, especially promotional and press-ready materials
  • Experience working with Japanese media desirable
  • Excellent English oral and written communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with e-marketing and social networking preferable, but not necessary
  • Strong research, editing and proofreading skills

*Note: This is a temporary, full time position beginning November 2014, with regular hours from Monday to Friday, for approximately three months. On occasion, attendance at after-hours events will also be required.
